There are still local radio stations that play "unheard" music, some of them are even owned by ClearChannel. In fact, one of our local classic rock stations hosts a "hometown rock search" yearly, the winner gets to play at their annual free music event (with national acts), and they're owned by ClearChannel.

Lucky – I’m game for almost anything. Off the top of my head and not in any real order I like The Who, U2, Brian Wilson, The Mamas & the Papas, Nirvana, The Replacements, The Jay Hawks, Morrissey, Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers. Bands that write music and play instruments. You turn on the award shows and you’re lucky if you see a guitar on stage, it’s disgusting.

yes this is true--BUT--i have seen several places where there is a policy that no matter how many request you get for local bands recording it only gets played once every 3 days or week---this will get you ON the air but wont let you rise up in the chartings. Clear channel is "famos " for this. and i doubt very much that just because a band got that local prize spot that doesnt mean that they will get air play at any OTHER clear channel stations or booked at other concerts. This is one way that they can get you all to think of them os "Your" local stationBuilds a good audiance--but doesnt usually do mych for the bands trying to break out.

True. I have a couple of questions for you, though. Ever heard of Mustard Plug? Domestic Problems? FledFive? Karmic? Troll For Trout? The Verve Pipe?

You don't necessarily have to have heard of them, but they are national acts, all from around here, almost all of whom won the hometown rock search when they competed.

I know how radio works, by the way, you're not telling me anything I don't know. And once again, I find myself on a topic that has nothing whatsoever to do with the topic of the thread it's posted in.

But Felix, veering off topic with other fun folks makes roadfood worthwhile. There's only so much most of us can contribute to "ticket scalping in the land of 10,000 lakes", but the rolling stones, radio, and podcasting are tasty and relevant, and if they did nothing more than piss frank off, they'd have served their purpose. we've gotta' give the old guy something to keep him awake. Like most music and music threads, improvisation sees to bring the most satisfying results, at least in my eyes.

I kind of like The Verve Pipe.

I truly expected to really get ripped on this, to read a litany of who is who and what is what. But the sad truth is that the guitar gods are 50-60 year old men, their blond haired front men are wrinkled from the sun and strain to hit the high notes. Neither can be replaced. We are left with "jam bands" who play to many notes, wanna be hippies, or faces who don't even know how to play but look good the on the covers of magazines.

Bands that write music and play instruments? There's hundreds. I'm not sure exactly who you mean by "jam bands who play too many notes," but I assume you're talking about any group who has ever taken the godawful Grateful Dead seriously as an influence. But if what you're looking for is a guitar-based band that writes catchy three-minute pop songs...well, as I said, there's hundreds. Thousands. In fact, here's a list, arbitrarily limited to artists that have released an album I liked within the last couple of years. In fact, just to help you if you want to search for song samples, I've included the titles of a favorite song by each artist.

The Acid House Kings ("This and That")
Antietam ("New Parade")
The Apples In Stereo ("Gloworm")
The Arcade Fire ("Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)")
Architecture In Helsinki ("Scissor Paper Rock")
The Beatifics ("This Year's Jessica")
Bleu ("Could Be Worse")
Bloc Party ("She's Hearing Voices")
The Breezy Porticos ("Gee, Your Math Looks Terrific")
Broken Social Scene ("Anthems For A 17-Year-Old Girl")
Caesars ("Jerk It Out")

The Charms ("Top Down")
The Comas ("Tonight on the WB")
Damone ("Frustrated Unnoticed")
The Decemberists ("July July")
Destroyer ("The Sublimation Hour")
Devotchka ("We're Leaving")
Dogs Die In Hot Cars ("Apples and Oranges")
Dressy Bessy ("Side 2")
Dungen ("Festival")
The Dutch Elms ("Cleopatra")
Electrelane ("On Parade")
Elf Power ("Walking with the Beggar Boys")
The Epoxies ("Stop the Future")
Fan Modine ("Newsstand of the Sun")
Feist ("Let It Die")
Fountains of Wayne ("Bright Future In Sales")
Ad Frank and the Fast Easy Women ("Postpunk At Cambridgeside mall")
Franz Ferdinand ("Take Me Out")
The Freak Accident ("Ex-Wife")
The French Kicks ("One More Time")
A Girl Called Eddy ("Tears All Over Town")
Green Day ("Whatsername")
Guided By Voices ("Echoes Myron")
The High Dials ("Morning's White Vibration")
The High Water Marks ("About the Ocean")
The Hives ("Dead Quote Olympics")
Interpol ("Evil")
The Kaiser Chiefs ("I Predict A Riot")
The Killers ("Mr. Brightside")

The Ray Mason Band ("Blessing the Girl")
The Minders ("Here Goes Nothing")
The Minus Five ("The Film of the Movie")
Minus the Bear ("I'm Totally Not Down With Rob's Alien")
The Mittens ("I'm Just Sayin'")
R. Stevie Moore ("Play Myself Some Music")
Motorpsycho ("Neverland")
The Mountain Goats ("Golden Boy")
The New Pornographers ("The Laws Have Changed")
Of Montreal ("Disconnect the Dots")
The Orange Peels ("Something Strange Happened")
Outrageous Cherry ("Pale Frail Lovely One")
The Pearlfishers ("I Can't Believe You Met Nancy")
Michael Penn ("Seen the Doctor")
The Pernice Brothers ("The Weakest Shade of Blue")
Josh Rouse ("Love Vibration")
The Shins ("New Slang")
The Slumber Party ("Electric Boots")
Sloan ("The Good In Everyone")
Snow Patrol ("How To Be Dead")
Sodastream ("Blinky")
The Soundtrack of Our Lives ("Belive I've Found")
John Southworth ("Applecart")
The Soviettes ("Winning Is For Losers")
Chris Stamey ("From the Word Go")
Tan Sleeve ("Bad From Both Sides")
The Telepathic Butterflies ("The Guilty Party")
Kevin Tihista's Red Terror ("Family Curse")
Mary Timony ("Friend To J.C.")
Ulysses ("Push You Away")
The Walker Kong ("My Photographer Friend")
Waltham ("All I Want is You")
The White Stripes ("Seven Nation Army")
Yo La Tengo ("From A Motel 6")

As I've always said, there is always good music out there, and if you're not finding it, then the fault lies with you, not with the music.

But are they playing at any "Roadfood Locations" But Seriously, Please tie in
The Rolling Stones Concert and the Roadfood Web Site. I just gotta hear how they
relate to this site? Hell, we all know they are way too "OLD" to eat any real Road Food!

By the way, I saw on TV the other day that Denny's will be having a Rolling Stone's Senior Dinner Special. Come and eat Dinner at 4:00 PM, See the concert at 6:00 PM and be home in bed by 10:00 PM! I know, 10:00 PM is Late but remember "Rock On Gramps!!!" "I Can't Get Me No......Medication.....No No No!"

Peace!

It's in the off topic forum dude! It's a good place to bounce things off people as most "foodies" seem to be nice folks.

Thanks for your list Lucky, I've heard of a few of them, many I haven't. I'll look some up on i-tunes.

if you want to see the stones or any other band. wait for concert to start then see what scalpers are hanging around. by now they have made thier money and tickets in there hand are becoming less valuable and will become worthless if they take them home. i ve seen the stones at least 30 times i've paid 15-25 dollars for most tickets. this works with any band as long as you don't mind missing the first song. being a ticket is a 100$ min i will miss start me up.
