Roly Poly Sandwiches

I used to love this place. They make wraps of many combinations, either cold or grilled, often with a dip. My husband is diabetic, and I've been going low-carb for diet purposes. Their wraps were offered in white, wheat, and low-carb, until recently. So I've been going less frequently, and when I did, got whole wheat wraps. Today, the manager (or franchise-owner or whatever) was rather rude to me when I was disappointed when she abruptly informed me they were out of whole wheat wraps today. I don't know if she was just in a bad mood or what, but she was really . . . snotty. So, in light of both these things, I've stuffed my frequent-diner card for this place into a less-accessible part of my wallet. I didn't quite go so far as to toss my card on the counter and walk out, nor have I thrown it away. I do realize that my irritation at her attitude may abate, and I might go back. But it won't be as often as it used to.

Roly Poly's here has THEE BEST mushroom soup. It was creamy & brothy & chock full of shrooms. But they never answered their phone to confirm that they received your fax. So one day I drove past & they were closed. Not surprising. There was another location, but they are now a Suburpia? I think?

The one here closed a few months back. I never went, but they always had people in there eating when I went by. Go figure...

Just saw some stats on SBA loan defaults. Roly Poly had a 37% default ratio. I think the stats were a couple of years old. Why did I post this? I dunno. There's one near me and the owner is trying to bail.

Thanks, Mike. I did feel a little singed there for a second. Perhaps in my irritation I failed to completely explain why I like the place. I like the sandwiches, and have seldom tried one I didn't like. I've taken the menu home and tried to re-create some for my dear husband, but it's never quite as good. I like the way they let you create your own. Sometimes I get a vegetarian one and have them add meat to it, wondering if that's somehow cheating. I also love their soups, and the mushroom is indeed terrific. I was, however, going to get a cup of the crab. I just thought the snarky attitude was off-putting. The previous owner was a really nice guy, and I've always wondered why he bailed. Maybe the loan default thing answers some questions. Thanks! Now . . . [musing] Why did I post this?

"Sometimes I get a vegetarian one and have them add meat to it, wondering if that's somehow cheating." We have quite a few customers that order a veggie-dog and then have us add meat-chili on it. First one surprised me, but not anymore.

I think this whole wrap thing will die out soon. It works great with all the blending of flavors in a super burrito and the middle eastern flavors of a schwarma or pita, but they also use breading that works better than a tortilla. American and European sandwiches work best with regular types of bread. I think they're a total failure in a tortilla wrap style. And I love a good breakfast sandwich where as a breakfast burrito is nausiating to me.

I thought I was the only one who hated wraps. Can't stand them. I don't care what you put in there, unless it's a taco or some melted cheese for a quesadilla. Sandwich fillings, meh. Roly's had one called Thanksgiving, it was not half bad and another one called French Twist that was just too much cheese, would have been better with half the cheese. Jennie, Here's my version of their mushroom soup: Harvest Mushroom Bisque 1 can Campbell's Healthy Choice Cream of Mushroom soup 1 can low sodium Chicken Broth 1 can mushroom pieces & stems 1-2 shakes garlic pepper 1-2 shakes crushed red pepper 3-4 shakes parsley flakes 2 shakes Worcestershire sauce (for color & flavor) Pour soup into pan over low to medium heat--instead of the water the can calls for, stir in a can of the chicken broth instead. (You will have chicken broth leftover, sorry) Mix slowly until well blended. Open the mushrooms, drain them & rinse them in a colander w/water. Drain well & add to soup, mixing them in. Add all other ingredients & heat til edges are bubbly. This tastes almost exactly like the soup @ Roly's--w/about half the sodium.

Seriously...wraps have been around for about 20 years, I don't think they're going anywhere. And they are a great alternative to those who have to cut down on carbs but still would like to eat a sandwich now and then.

Well, their veggie combos (such as "Nut N Honey") are fabulous, but even better with a little roast beef.
