Roscoe's Big Dog -Hartford, CT

Roscoe's Big Dog reopened on Temple Street in Hartford, CT on November 1st. I was there at lunch time November 2 and Ron was very busy training the new staff. This is their soft opening period for training and solving any problems. I do not know the new Grand Opening Date. For me, the condiments are more important than the dog. I had one regular dog with mustard, onion, and Roscoes Radical Relish and one with mustard, onion and the chili meat sauce. I polished them off with a order of Belgian Fries and a soda. The quality of the dog was as good as I remember the condiments satisfied my taste. Remember they are now on Temple Street not in their former location on Franklin Avenue. Walt

Today I had another trip to Roscoe's Big Dog. One big dog, Belgium fries and a "diet" black cherry soda was close to heaven. Walt

Temple street on Microsoft Streets & Trips 2008 shows up as a dotted line? Also, the Roscoe's food icon is still at the old location. Anyway, I was in Hartford last week and could not get down the street for some reason, accident, construction? Forget about MS Streets.. anyone from the area know an easier way other than Rte 84, exit 52 (Convention Center)? Thanks, HDK

Just find Main Street in Hartford. There are two big restaurants, City Steam Brewery and Dish. Temple Street is a tiny one way street between the two. Mapquest and Google Maps have directions. There is also a map on Rosco's website.

I went to Hartford Saturday for my monthly haircut; Denise came with me as we had many errands to run. While there, I took her to Roscoe's. Denise enjoyed her hot dog and the Belgian fries so much that she decided to come with me next month. This is high praise from Denise. Walt

was here for lunch today...i'm kind of disappointed...I paid nearly $9.00 for chili cheese dog and chili cheese fries that was mediocre at best. I guess I now know why this place was empty!

Went today and line was out the door. Worth the wait and every penny. Afraid I'll have to disagree. The dogs are huge, the fries are fresh cut, the condiments are not out of a can and the sodas are custom made. There was a recent posting about quality vs. quantity. I definitely prefer quality.

I've been to Connecticut a few times to sample hot dogs. In all I've been to about a dozen places, some more than once. Last time longdog took me to a bunch of places, including Rosco's. I'd have to say it was my favorite dog in Connecticut and one of my top 2 or 3 anywhere. You won't find a better beef and pork dog. It's prepared perfectly. The toppings are homemade and not over the top like some places. They complement rather than take away from the dog itself. I wish it was closer to where I live.

I must acknowledge the help of long dog and murbike, who wrote the original RF user reviews for Rosco's. Their reviewshere were archived on the RF site because of the move uptown, though I found them on the "Awards" page of the Rosco's site. Also, we loved the fact that our friend Waltpiii had the same idea for lunch that day, and the chili dog with onions pictured was his. I credited him in the title of that photo (seen at the bottom when you click on it). Walt, I'm only sorry that it took us so long to get over to the new Rosco's! Chris

Chris, got a picture of my Chili Dog. I had all ready inhaled my favorite dog, one with mustard, onions and "Radical Relish". For those of us, who need to watch our waists, I know hot dogs are not on any diet that I have found, Roscoe's has a great diet black cherry soda. Walt

I'm going to have to say that woody's is by far the better hot dog joint in hartford.

I have to disagree with that one. I travel with a group of other hot dog fanatics every Friday. We go all over Hartford and surrounding suburbs for a hot dog lunch. We keep spreadsheets on each location. We'll do Woody's at least twice a year. We all prefer Rosco's over Woody's. For us, we look at the dog by itself, then the condiments, preparation of all items including the dog, bun and condiments, and one guy adds cleanliness to his list. We don't care about price or ambiance. Though we all have different top fives, Rosco's is on all of them and Woody's is not on a single one (in the top 5 that is). You'll see Ranch House rated higher, which serves the Bogner skinny foot long all beef skinless. Also usually highly rated are The Glenwood in Hamden (for those that travel out of the immediate suburbs), The Dawg House in N.B., Capitol Lunch (not on mine), Augie and Rays and Berlin Pizza to name a few. Since I just noticed the Woody's thread, I'll add this posting there as well. Hot Dogs are very subjective. There will never be a "best" because of that, just one person's preference.
