Rosco's Big Dog

Excellent review by long dog (Drew Buynak). It's about time one of the best hot dog joints in the country was reviewed. In my opinion, when it comes to hot dogs, you have to start with a quality hot dog. If you don't, it doesn't matter what you do with it. Rosco's uses a Thumann's beef/pork griller which is top of the line. This dog is good enough to stand on it's own with just a little bit of mustard. Which is how I enjoy it most of the time. I'm lucky enough to live in an area where this frank is available, although at a premium price. It's a big seller in supermarkets, although I'm stumped as to why very few hot dog restaurants use this dog, preferring to go with the dog made for deep frying, which is popular in North Jersey. Maybe because it is so available. The toppings at Rosco's are homemade and very good. They complement, rather than overwhelm the dog. When I was there with Drew, I had a plain dog with mustard and sampled the toppings separately. I also sampled some of Drew's dog, which had mustard, chili, and coleslaw on the top. Absolutely delicious. Enough to make me consider making the long drive back.

John - Just drive to my place, and I'll do the rest. We can hit a few - like we did in Oct '04. I'll make sure you get a variety of dogs - at least one Thumann's, one Grote & Weigel, one Martin Rosol, one Hummel's, and one Mucke's.

Was there for lunch today. Same consistent high quality roadfood. The "Dog of the Month" for June is called a Pizza Pup. Sliced pepperoni curled under the dog, and it's topped with shredded mozzarella and a homemade tomato and meat sauce. He's bringing back the "Beaner Weiner" which you can see pictured in the review for July's Dog of the Month. Also, the "Peanut Mutter" is now a regular item after it's success as a dog of the month. It's ingredients are a strip of hickory smoked bacon, shredded cheddar, and Skippy peanut butter. I also have an updated menu with new items that I'll submit soon. I left it in the car. The one in the review is probably at least a year old.

long dog, Would love to get up to Connecticut again to go dogging with you. Hopefully I can make it up there in the Fall. I'm busy with the Munchmobile this summer and looking forward to the next hot dog tour in Sept. Hope you can make that one. How's Ron at Rosco's doing?

He's doing well. The review has brought in a little business for him. He won Hartford Advocate's Best Hot Dog for the 3rd consecutive year, and is still waiting for a visit from the Stern's. He's also looking at relocating. Always asks if I've spoken to you lately. From March 21 thru September 21st, he stays open until 7PM on Fridays and Saturdays. The review says 3PM which are his "winter" hours. All other days till 3PM, and always closed on Sunday. You have my number and private email. LMK when you're available, and I'll make sure that I am. I have a list of over 100 dog places in the state, but if you want the Thumann's - you have to go to Rosco's

My problem is that i"m like a kid in candy store. All the possible great toppings are available and I can't make up my mind. Usually I have to go for two different dressed regular dogs instead of the large dog. Best news is that I've filled my 10 visit card and the next dog is free.

Brooker - I had my heart set on a Dixie Dog and a BBQ Pitbull before I walked in the door, but had to try the Pizza Pup after seeing what was on it - so I had three - all regular sized (6/lb)! My son (little dog) had a regular-sized CC Rider and Pizza Pup, and my girlfriend had a BIG Die Flieder and a steamed cheeseburger. We split a large order of Belgian's, and an order of cinnamon and sugar fritters. Forgot the camera. Need pix of the steamed cheeseburg and fritters for the site. Sonj - Wish I knew when you were in town.
