Rosedale Barebeque in KC

Hi,
My wife used to live in Kansas City when she was an artist for Hallmark. Before we were married, years ago, I would visit her out there. Needless to say I couldn't get enough of KC barbeque...Arthur Bryants etc.
But my wife's favorite was a small mom and pop place called,I think, Rosedale Barbeque. She claimed it was the best, especially their sauce.
Anyone know if it's still there and still as good?

I live 5 minutes from Rosedale and 5 minutes in the other direction from Oklahoma Joe's. I go to OJ's almost exclusively.

It's been quite sometime since I've been to Rosedale, probably 3 years. The meat was always very dry and harsh. I did like the sauce alright, and the beans. But the meat was only ok. Years ago, as in 25 years ago, it was very good. They do have their followers, like most places here. Rosedale seems to be as busy as always. I should give it another try!

    Thanks, Zataar,

Next time you're their, find out if they ship their sauce. We'd love to experience that again.
Last time I was there was in '88 and I remember a half chicken dinner, baked beans and a beer for a ridiculously cheap price! Bet it's gone up...Again thanks so much for letting us know it's still there and post here,if you learn anything about shippinh!

I'll let you know about the sauce. It has been so long since I've been there, I definitely plan to give them a try again very soon.
How long has it been since you've been to KC, leethebard? It has certainly changed. There are 3 BBQ places on Southwest Blvd. now. Rosedale, Danny Edward's BBQ, who used to be located downtown on Grand, but got booted out to make way for "progress" and Smoky Joe's.

Hi, Last time was summer of 88. Helped my new wife pack her things for the ride to our new home in New Jersey. We hit a lot of barbeque joints, like Arthur Bryants...but my wife's favorite and mine was Rosedale. She still talks about their sauce! And I can still see that chicken dinner. As I remember it, it was a very small place.

I think their best meat is their ribs. When someone from my office is going to be in that part of town, there are several people that have standing orders.

I like to eat at the counter and watch how efficiently they handle the walk in traffic. Juggling several orders at once and doing the bill in their heads.

Rosedale has been around since 1934. I can remember eating there as young as 2, which would make me a 1954 customer.

I always loved the sauce, the meat not as much. It was a good lunch destination because the sandwiches were Cheap. Beef on a bun:)

That is true, before the '90s they had a long curved counter and a few tables. They expanded in the early '90s to include lots of tables and a very efficient ordering spot. It's a big brick building now, not a small wood shack. The wood shack was good, though!

I am planning on a 5 minute trip to see if it's improved. Maybe tomorrow. I hope the sauce is as enjoyable as it once was, and the meat is not so dry.

I thought that they were better in the old building. Good sauce and cold beer, though...

I did indeed stop by Rosedale today. I left my drive way at 11:16 and was pulling back into my drive-way at 11:33. Rosedale is fast! When I got there it was 3/4 full. I was the only female customer in the whole place. Only women were working behind the counter, and working they were. Models of efficiency.

I ordered beef on a bun and a regular order of fries. I had my order and was walking out the door 4 minutes later. As I placed my order the counter woman loudly repeated it, walked over to the window before I even paid, bagged up the order, then took my $6.24. I had to get sauce myself at a condiment station situated right below a big screen TV. By the time I left the parking lot was filling up fast.

leethebard, unless the girl didn't understand my question and I didn't understand her answer, it appears that Rosedale doesn't sell their sauce in anything that can be shipped. They had big squeeze bottles of sauce and plastic to-go containers. When I asked about shipping sauce the answer was "That's how it comes." with a nod in the direction of the squeeze bottles.

The brisket was pretty good, not dry or harsh like the last several times I'd been there. It had a nice smoke flavor, but was oddly bland. It didn't taste like it had been cooked with salt at all. It had the right amount of lean to fat for me. The fries seemed to be the frozen crinkle cut kind, but they were very good. The sauce, I think, is an acquired taste. Way, way heavy on the celery seed, and very sweet. All in all, it was enjoyable. I haven't been eating anything not so healthy for awhile, it was a nice break.

i get the brisket by the pound for like $8.50, a bargain and its very lean and tender, plus they throw in the small bottle of sauce for free and you can get more sauce for free too at the condiment counter.

the ribs are very meaty and a deal for $11.00 slab on mondays.

try the beans (hot-spicy) and potato salad (again a bit spicy with horseradish i believe).

a fav by my bunch is the turkey, its lightly smoked and moist, i got 2 pounds and the kids here devoured it in no time!

this is one of the few bbq places where things are not overly salted and spiced and the meat is always very lean(which i prefer these days!)

the sauce is spicy, the fries are okay, oh and just keep in mind the meat is not very heavily smoked, its more subtle usually.
