    I am not "that" old.

    And...  Coook cuh mongaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

          Piñon

Growing up in Connecticut we called them Indian nuts. You;d crack the shells with your teeth, spit the shells out and then eat the nuts, themselves. I was probably 35 before I realized that Indian nuts and pinon nuts were the same, and also known as pignoli nuts, they were basic to pesto.

I know nothing about the natural history of the NE, but I do know that the Piñon Pine, which is the source of piñon nuts, grows only in the SW US and parts of Mexico.

Well, I have no idea where these pine nuts came from, but they're really all about the same. A pine nut is a pine nut.

Not so. To my palate, Piñon nuts don't have the resinous harsh taste of regular pine nuts. Piñon nuts are nuttier tasting. I can't stand regular pine nuts or pesto made from them. I've always likened them to eating a 2x4. Conversely,  I'll eat Piñons all day, AND I like them in coffee.

Well, as I recall, Indian nuts actually were from the Southwest.

badbyron772 and enginecapt, thank you for correcting me -- I've made the edit.  And to think I proofed that list 3 times!

And a huge THANKS so far to everyone for these great suggestions!    Chris

To be annoyingly precise, Rialto isn't up at the summit, it's down here in the valley, in between San Berdoo and Cucamonnnnnnnnnnga. (the old farts will get that one)

Not unless you mention Anaheim and Azusa.

Trivia Quiz---Yes, but on what show and who said it??

Piñon.  That would be the Spanish spelling.

They're hard to eat but I'll stop and continue eating them until the last one has been swallowed.

So, where do I find pinon coffee?  Sounds intriguing.

You can order it at the link I provided if you like whole-bean, or Trader Joe's sells that brand in ground form.

I definately second this suggestion. Great BBQ cooked out back, and an interesting place to say the least, in a rather remote and beautiful section of Rt 66.

My friend from Albuquerque claims the Green Chile Cheeseburger at Rex's beats the GCCB at Bobcat Bite and the other Santa Fe choices - http://rexsburgers.com/index.htm.  Purely hearsay at this point.

I think you will enjoy Cafe on the Route in Baxter Springs much more than Chicken Annie’s or Chicken Mary’s.

Allow more time for the stretch in Kansas than you might expect. There are as many interesting stops in that short section as any on the Route.

We did this exact trip- (except stopping at Amarillo and turning around)
and had a marvelous time a couple of years back-
Clantons in Vinita OK had some truly wonderful Chicken Fried Steak
And Cattlemans really was great (real) steak
We had some really good BBQ at the Hickory Pit in Rolla,
and had our own "interesting" experience at the Elbow Inn...
                                        Here's our trip report-
                                        http://www.roadfood.com/Forums/tm.aspx?m=395284&high=irisarbor+route+66

there's lots of write ups on places you might be interested in stopping or avoiding..LOL
I did hear from someone else that Funks is already sold out of Maple Sirup for the season... :(

I second Dell Rhea's in Willowbrook, IL. Also, down the road apiece toward Romeoville/Joliet along old 66 is White Fence Farm, with its family-style fried chicken dinners.

If you are only doing one Chicken dinner, Del Rhea's is much more charming.

And once in Springfield, you must also stop at the Dr. of BBQ- one of the only BBQ places really worth eating at that isn't your own Backyard.
(and remember Cozy Dog is closed on Sundays)

badbyron772 and enginecapt, thank you for correcting me -- I've made the edit.

Without further ado, here’s a chronological list of the towns we’ll visit, and we’d love to hear from you about your must-eat suggestions on the Mother Road (and detours, since we have a few worked in)!  Thank you very much!   Chris

Illinois: Cicero, Willowbrook, Romeoville, Joliet, Wilmington, Braidwood, Dwight, Pontiac, Springfield, Litchfield, Mount Olive, Collinsville

When you get to Springfield, IL there are a number of excellent places to have really good grub. Killer BBQ at Dr. of BBQ (http://drofbbq.com/) 5th & Stanford - the owner is also a member and poster here.

Springfield is also (officially) the "Chilli Capitol of the Civilized Universe". So, try the chilli at Joe's Chili Bowl - 2401 S. MacArthur Blvd (in the Town & Country strip mall). A small 10 stool chilli, soup and sandwich place, it has better chilli than -- The Den/Joe Roger's at 820 S. 9th. Although, The Den wins every popularity contest - mostly because this is a conservative food town and they have been here longer. The Den does have the BEST chilli dogs I have had lately.

A Springfield tradition is the Horseshoe sandwich. The best of the bunch (you can get one at darned near any cafe, restaurant, and/or many saloons) is to be found at Ritz's Li'l Fryer (2 locations - 2148 N. Grand Ave, East & 700 W. Jefferson). http://www.horseshoesandwich.com/2009/06/07/ritzs/ -or- http://whatscookingameric.../HorseshoeSandwich.htm

Charlie Parker's has been featured on the spiky-haired obnoxious arshluk's show Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives on TVFN. It's in a WWII style quonset hut and serves really decent diner-style grub. - 700 North Street.

                                                  ENJOY!!!
