When I was on the road in the big old truck, RR was the only place I came across that offered truckers a discount. I liked that.

they took out the berlin turnpike and the north haven restaurants. As far as my immediate world is concerned, they are gone. If I ever feel the need to travel for some nostalgia, I know the website to go to so I can book my tickets around locations.........that are relatively still there

I wonder if the one I used to go to near Exit 12 on the NJ Turnpike has been reinstated. According to the website, a couple still exist on the NJ Turnpike, but I thought Bob's Big Boy was at the aforementioned rest areas.

Roy Rogers when I was growing up was not far away in Rutherford, NJ. That place was THE only notable fast food joint ever. The Double R Burgers were to die for. We did stop at a Roy's on the turnpike back from MD - they didn't have those on the menu, but still, we had to try a roast beef, and it was pretty darn good, I have to say. I love their BBQ sauce - in the "dark ages" the better sauce was in the packets, but they didn't carry them at this location. Still, it was good. I'd go back again - but oh how I'd love to have an old time Double R!

There are still a few RRs operating in New York. They are
located on rt. 90 aka NYS Thruway. I noted a couple of them
at the rest stops both east and west between Syracuse and
              Rochester.............geo

The Roy Rogers on RT.5 in North Haven, CT is gone, but, in it's place is a NEW ARBY's, the signs are up and the inside is finished.
I would guess the other stores in CT will follow suit.

The sign out front says "OPENING SOON"

Wow. What a great thread. When I was a mere youth (circa 1970), I used to go to Roy Rogers in Royal Oak, Michigan. It was next door to Yorba Linda Lanes where I bowled. I can picture the interior; stepping up to the counter; and then getting what I thought at the time, was a great sandwich. The place eventually closed and was at some point replaced by a pinball and videogame arcade. All these years later, I am told by friends that still live in Michigan that it the place is now a....Starbucks.

Just before I left Virginia last month I heard that Roy Rogers is building a location in Ranson, WV just a mile east of the Charles Town Races & Slots casino complex.

I worked at Roy Rogers back in high school...(class of 77)
workd at the Short Hills, NJ location, now a Wendy's..)
I was a hostess, and cashier... I used to have to wear white cowboy boots, and I signed up kids for the "Buckaroo Club"...
there are still some Roy's left in NJ

And the good news is that they are back to using REAL roast beef, just like the good 'ol days.
(not that processed tasting Arby's stuff). And I always ask for "extra au jus")

Supposedly the one near Toms River, NJ is the only "original" NJ one left. It is off Exit 80 (heading south ) on the Garden State Parkway. It's on route 9, about 3 miles from the parkway.
The other Roy's are at highway rest stops. There was one in Brunswick Square Mall, but it closed about a year ago.

their burgers don't do much for me, though.

Great post Ellen. I am going to be back in NJ Labor Day weekend, right near this location (in Manchester actually). I might combine a visit to this place on my way to the White House Sub Shop. BTW, I thought the Bacon Cheeseburger at Roy's was good. But it's been a long time, about 20+ years!

                                    Thank you.

When it was owned by Marriot they ran a hilarious radio ad mocking Arby's "roast beef": beef pieces held together by "binders". It was read by a George C. Scott sound-alike riffing on the opening speech from Patton. Instead of the "shoveling sh*t in Lousiana", "Patton said "at least you won't be in Lousiana picking binders out of your teeth".

O.K., you had to hear it.

My in-laws live east of Lakehurst, where Rt 70 goes from 2 to 4 lanes, right near the WaWa. Haven't visited them yet since they moved there over a year ago.

I think there is still a Roy's in Westminster Maryland, which is about hour northwest of Baltimore.

I remember Roy's having a fixing bar, which is something you would never see from the major chains.

I remember Roy's having a fixing bar, which is something you would never see from the major chains.
The Westminster Roy Rogers closed several months ago, but is now being renovated and will re-open again as Roy Rogers. There is at least one RR now in Frederick, and there may be a second one as well.

The Roy Rogers in Westminster had their grand opening today at 10:30 am and the first 52 people got a free combo each week for a year. Hopefully it will be much better run than the previous Roy's. It would be very hard to be worse

                                              I hear you...
the Roy's in the Brunswick Square Mall in NJ closed recently.
the food was decent enough, but there was such a huge communication barrier in getting your order correct...

Unfortunately that was the downfall of Roy Rogers Restaurants - Marriott Corporation. Roy's was their attempt at a higher-quality fast-food establishment until they realized that it required more money to run a higher-quality fast-food establishment than one that sold crap. As a result, the vast majority of Roy's went the way of the Gino's Giant...

Those Roy Rogers on the NJ Turnpike are operated by HMS Host. I found the biggest problem is that they sit around too long in aluminum-foil covered paper. On average, the stand-alone franchises in places like Maryland are better. Do not judge the overall brand by your experiences on the NJ Turnpike.

I can't really speak for how those rest area ones are, compared to the one free standing Roy's left (just south of Toms River on rt 9, in Bayville). I go thru their drive thru occasionally, and it hits the spot. (also check out the Wiener Wagon place across the street for an Italian hot dog, if you ever go to this Toms River area one)

But I'm grateful they are back to serving "real" roast beef again,
instead of that processed crap like Arby's has. And I always ask for an extra side of au jus.

The fried chicken is decent, not great, though, IMO.

Thanks Ellen I will report back. Not sure when I'll get there with my coworker but we usually go to places within a week of talking about them. I plan on getting the roast beef since that's what I always got when they were around more. Also, if they have the oreo shakes that they used to have I'm definitely going for that too
