Roy Rogers Restaurants Fri, 05/12/06 12:12 PM (permalink)
A lot of people, including myself, thought Roy Rogers was completely gone (Thanks to Hardees ). A few years back I discovered that was not the case. There are quite a few of them in Maryland and New Jersey. I just happen to live close to the only one in Ohio.

Anyway, anybody have any opinions on Roy Rogers? To me they taste the same as they used to - completely awesome.

Check out their Website at http://www.royrogersrestaurants.com/ .

Haven't been to Roy's in years, but I make my own Double R Bar burgers. Grill the burger and top with sliced ham and cheese. What could possibly be better?

I remember driving my parents nuts in the 70s begging for Roy's short lived Apple Crisp.

Damnit. Now I've gotta go to Roy's. Thanks loads.

Breakfast menu looks good too. FF joints always seem better at pulling off breakfast items IMO.

You're probably about to be flooded with posts directing you to post this on the Fast Food Forum, and critizing you patronage of such places.

      Enjoy, and

Seams like I remember Roy's used to be in Texas but long gone now I think.

The Apple Crisp mentioned earlier in this thead is still available at the Roy Roger's location in the Eastgate area in Cincinnati

I did a brief writeup with pics re: this particular Roy's last summer.

Here's a link to it: http://www.roadfood.com/Forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=9018&whichpage=2 (you'll need to scroll down a bit)

Ignore WanderingJew on this subject, he's a bitter old purist who near as I can tell is incensed that fast food establishments even exist.

              Thanks TJ
When I checked the menu I saw that they have an apple crisp sundae. Gotta be close to what I remember.

I minimize chain experiences myself, but I'm gonna head for Roy's sometime real soon.

I just had Roy Rogers this week. The one near Mt Carmel in Ohio. Had a Double R burger. Those things are fantastic. I remember eating Roys all the time as a kid. I cannot remember if the Roast Beef is good becasue I always end up with a Double R. Good stuff. I hope they stick around.

I find that their burgers are VERY boring, a very plain old-fashioned taste....
I can even make a better one in my frying pan, and I'm not much of a cook (understatement)

However, their roast beef sandwich is excellent once again, as they are using the "real thing" again, just like they used to...

My first job was at Roy Rogers in Short Hills, NJ, back in the late 70's while I was in high school. (it is now a Wendy's restaurant)
I was a hostess, and I had to wear white cowboy boots, and sign kids up for the "Buckaroo Club"

It was right down the hill from the Grunings, (long gone, RIP)which had awesome hot fudge sundaes......
I worked there at Grunings for just a couple of weeks, long enough to try all the ice cream flavors....
they had the Short Hills "ladies who lunched"; I remember they would order very particularly, as in "I want burnt toast, and make sure it's burnt".........and some of them would nurse their cups of coffee for a few hours.......(it seems like the ones who stayed the longest left the lousiest tips, why is that?!?)

Way back when, the roast beef sandwich was the ONLY reason to go there but it was a very big reason.

There weren't any Roy Rogers around where I grew up, but when I moved to Connecticut in '85 there was one down the street from me. I don't remember the food being that memorable, but the strawberry shakes - heaven in a cup! They made them using (I think) strawberry sundae topping mixed into a vanilla shake. MMMMMMM-mmmmm. I got in the habit of stopping at the Roy Rogers drive-thru just as I started my 2.5 hour trek back home to MA, every few weekends or so. I would buy one, then force myself to save it until I was about half-way through RI. It was something to look forward to, to make the long drive more bearable.

After I moved back to MA, they started popping up fairly close. I turned my now-husband on to those shakes, and he was as hooked as I was.

Sadly, they all seem to have disappeared, apparently having been eaten up by the other chains. THere are a few in CT still, and we stopped at one on the way back from NY last year. The strawberry shakes have become completely forgettable.

I had a buddy who was housebound for a month after foot surgery, so when he got out I took him to Roy's and let my son and his friend come along. The meal was as good as the Roy's we grew up with, and confirmed to me how lucky we are to have the Eastgate location surviving as a touchstone to our youth. For the record I had a large Roast Beef, a Double R burger, apple cheese crisp, and a large iced tea. Same thing I'll get the next time I visit.

WE had a Roy Rogers in Irwin PA....long gone. some of my friends stole their covered wagon out front.....he he......seems like we frequented Rax Roast Beef more than Roy's.....the Rax is now a Taco Bell and the Roy's is a dentist office or travel agency....We had another Roast Beef joint called Heap Big Beef...had a Native American motif.......it didn't last long....became a sub place.....

The one in North Haven CT is horrible, yet I always see tour buses pulling into it.

Other than that, there seems to be very little business there.

Speaking of RR - shouldn't this be under the FFF threads.

Look's like I'm going to have to make a trip to Cincinatti next time I'm out this way. Let's see... leave early, have a few Skyline Coneys for breakfast, and drive around a little bit, and get lunch at Roy's.

PapaJoe8,this was about 10 or more years ago when my dad was alive. We used to go for rides to some of the towns around here. Thought there were no more Carl's Jr.s here, but there is one down on I-37South near Leal Road south of San Antonio and is listed on their website.I think there still are Hardee's in Kerrville.

Yep we had one on Little River Turnpike in Fairfax, VA that went from a Jr. Hot Shoppe to a Roy's. I drove by it a few years ago and it had evolved into an Einstein Brothers Bagel Shop. Speaking of which, didn't the Marriott empire start with the Hot Shoppe down in DC?

In Northern VA, there are two Roy's that I know of: Belle View shopping center (off the GW Parkway) and near Woodlawn Plantation on Route 1.
The Woodlawn location has been there for years. I've lived in the area since the mid '70s and it was a Gino's before turning into a Roy Rogers. Now Gino's---that's a blast from the past.

Man, I love Roy Rogers. There used to be one very close to my old house in DE but it shut down. Now the only place you can find them is along turnpikes at service centers. There are several on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, for example. That's the only time I get Roy Rogers anymore, but I don't drive the PA Turnpike that often...

I always loved their fried chicken. When I was a kid I'd always get a wing, a leg, fries, and a coke.

There are a few on the NJ Tpk. I stopped at one over the summer--was still very good. Too bad this chain doesn't come back from the dead to it's former glory.

There is also a Roy Rogers at BWI airport. Oh, and I agree with you about the RR chicken - absolutely delectable. I look forward to eating several servings of this wonderful concoction while I'm in the Maryland area from the 4th to the 12th of November!

I just had a flashback about this place, when I was passing an Arby's yesterday. The last time I ate at Arby's, I thought to myself how their roast beef couldn't hold a candle to Roy Rogers. That was my favorite fast food place growing up, we had one in New Jersey in the town I grew up in. Right up until senior year in HS (1984) I used to eat there regularly. The last time I visited, it too, was gone.
