The remodeled Big K is a gem of a ballpark.
We really liked it, especially the outfield concourse and the statues of George Brett, Frank White, etc.  However, the Royals now need to remodel the 6th-inning "condiment race" as there are only 3 competitors: mustard, ketchup, and pickles.  I'd think that with KC's carnivorous heritage there'd be a strip steak, some ribs, maybe a pork shoulder...

What a great food city Kansas City is! Last time I was there I dragged my team to Strouds - 10 people, and I was the only one that ordered the great fried chicken pieces - the rest of them ordered a boneless "chicken fried chicken" plate. Now there is certainly nothing wrong with an excellent piece of boneless fried chicken with gravy, but I was surprised :-(

The chicken fried steak is also wonderful at Stroud's.

...or a bottle of Barbecue Sauce...How the heck did the miss that one?!?  Seems like the most obvious choice for KC.  That's like a Sausage Race at Miller Park without a Bratwurst!

I'm so embarrassed for my KC brothers and sisters right now.

The race likely has a simple explanation - and an equally simple solution.

It's all about the sponsorship.  It looks like the current hot dog race at the K is sponsored by Farmland, which doesn't seem to sell slabs of ribs or barbecue sauce.

Now, who do we know that sells barbecue sauce that might be willing to sponsor a race....in the name of keeping things regionally authentic, of course? ;-)

Hey, if Rich Davis didn't think it was a good idea, I'm sure as heck not gonna put my money there.

Great trip report! I need to spend more time in KC. My only visit there has been one business trip, just a couple months ago, and that was spent in Olathe and Overland Park. Only had time for one food stop of consequence, and it happened to be Jack Stacks. My surprise favorite turned out to be the lamb ribs -- never had 'em before, and now can't wait to have them again.

Hah!  This may be one of the most regionally specific posts I've seen here in a long while.  I can hear the clickity-clack of Roadfooders Googling Valomilk and Cherry Mash (ghastly, BTW) right now.

I don't have to Google nuthin' - my mom grew up in Salina, KS, so I have been a semi frequent - sometimes willingly - visitor to the area many times. So Cherry Mash? Suitcases got stuffed with them...
