SANDWICHES YOU MAY LIKE Tue, 01/15/08 5:35 PM (permalink)
Yell at me if you will. There is a TV/book-on pbs that is all about great sandwiches. If you have not seen it or read it is great. I am sure most of you have seen/read it. I just thought I would share some of my thoughts. Again sorry if this is has already been posted.
I have been to a few places in the book, not many. The best so far has been Kelleys Roast Beef in Boston.

You should see the pbs special simply titled "Hot Dog." It's great. If you are unsure of what is here, the forums have a search function. It's worth a check just for the insights on things you would never think to ask about.

Often too busy to travel. I thrive on transplanted peoples to bring me their food.

WQED made the PBS sandwich special Sandwiches That You Will Like by Rick Sebak in 2002. Is that the one?

Working with Rick Sebak, Becky Mercuri put together the book Sandwiches that You Will Like. A year later, she wrote American Sandwich, which lists a sandwich for each of the fifty states.

Last year she wrote The Great American Hot Dog Book. Amazon.com lists all three.

I'll bet the Central Grocery in NO is in the book.

Yup! In the book, Signor Lupo Salvadore is credited as inventing the muffaletta at Central Grocery, which he opened in 1906.

I was watching it when I saw this thread. I never get tired of "a hot dog program" either.

                        Dearfolk,
Seriously, for once... do any of these books make mention of livermush as a sandwich commodity? Take two slices of sourdough or marbled rye bread, a little mayo, a slice of livermush, maybe a pickle (I'd prefer some dill slices), a dollop of good mustard (maybe Dijon), and lettuce and tomato if you choose, and you've got yourself a nice sammidge.
I can easily suppose that liver pudding (rice-based instead of corn-meal-based, like Counts' or Harvin's in S. C.) would be an easy substitute.
On a small side track, I've never noted anyplace I've ever been as having a scrapple sandwich on their menu. Has anyone seen this anomaly?
For all you Cincinnatians, how about goetta? Can it make a sandwich, or does it just fry up by itself, all lonesome on the grill?
Gracious, so many pertinent questions, so little time to ask 'em....
