SAVE THE YANKEE DOODLE Sat, 02/2/08 11:19 PM (permalink)
You may have heard, the Yankee Doodle in New Haven has closed due to economic hardship. Immediately upon closing, a group of Yale students and alumni formed a Facebook group to save this national treasure by forming a business plan and raising cash for the future Doodle. Please go to the www.facebook.com group titled SAVE THE DOODLE (already 2600+ members in only 4 days) or visit the Yankee Doodle website (www.thedoodle.com) and consider donating to the cause. I received an email from 3rd generation owner Rick Beckwith today who told me he is overwhelmed by the support and it looks like he may be able to reopen one day. Don't let this important slice of Americana slip away.

Below is an email I received yesterday from Rick Beckwith:

    Dear Chris,

I'm sorry that I'm just getting back to you now. I am responding to each e-mail I've received and there's a lot. Because of the overwhelming support from thousands of people a new and improved Doodle might open in the same location. You can stay posted by going to the SAVE THE DOODLE group on www.facebook.com.

Thanks again for that posting, it's because of people like you that the Doodle will hopefully be able to reopen.

Thanks again for all your support and kind words.

    Rick

NEW HAVEN — The landlord for the Yankee Doodle Coffee Shop, which closed last week, has withdrawn his offer to the owner of “The Doodle” to keep the space vacant for two months.

Michael, thanks for this article. I found the last line interesting: “The problem with ‘The Doodle’ was not a lack of customers,” McKee [a Doodle supporter] said. “It was lack of space.”

But isn't it the lack of space that made Yankee Doodle so charming? Ten counter stools with someone standing behind you to take your seat when you finished? More tables would bring more customers, but an 'expanded' menu? Why fix it if it ain't broke? Chris

P.S. Michael, congrats on your 8,000th post! Man, I'll be there some day...

Hoffman, the 8000th must be a complaint.

It will be nice if they come up with a new improved location.

You have an excellent point about what made the place so terrific. On the other hand, if it wasn't broke it would likely still be open.
