SC Barbecue in Charleston, SC?

I've perhaps left it a bit late but I'll be in Charleston until early Monday and was wondering if there's a place in Charleston (say up to 30 mins drive out of the Historic district) that has good SC cue. It strikes me that Charleston doesn't promote much 'cue. Maybe it's an inland thing. Suggestions inc. directions are welcomed. Thanks, NC Penguin

Haven't been there in a while , but on Hwy 17A between Moncks Corner & Summerville , the BBQ Barn is good. The buffet is the best deal. Also in the town of Summerville, there used to be a Dukes BBQ that was good. Both places are less than 25 miles from Charleston.I think one of Dukes other locations is reviewed somewhere on here.

Hey, Mama Brown's BBQ in Mt Pleasant is good, but call first. They may be closed. Some restaurants in this area close on Mondays. The suggestion to stick to traditional lowcountry cuisine is a good one. Jestine's, Seewee (Hwy 17 in Awendaw, north of Mt P) oogan's Porch and 82 Queen are all good. Have fun- it's apparently going to be REAL hot today! Sue In Mt Pleasant.

I've only just read this thread. I ended up getting take out from Momma Brown's in Mount Pleasant on Friday night. I'd read about Bessingers but noted that they were famous for their burgers so I gave them a miss. I did call the restaurant before heading out there for SC 'cue. It was pretty good. For dine in, there was buffet but for take out I got SC cue (there was NC cue too) and three sides plus cornbread for $5.94 inc. tax. It was my first taste of SC 'cue and whilst I was in SC, I ate lots of lowcountry cuisine. I had she crab soup twice, shrimp and grits once, softshell crab twice, bought two bags of boiled peanuts (which I'm very fond of now) and fried seafood (shrimp and scallops). In fact, over the week in Charleston, I think I averaged eating seafood every day... NC Penguin

I'm not nuts about yellow Q so I always get their "Kingstree style" which is more like NC West. The buffet is fabulous. And you had our caviar! (Boiled p-nuts). You did good!

It just blows my mind that someone would pass up mustard base bbq sauce. I have tried the NC vinegar bbq sauce and it is the pits. I cant understand who would want to put vinegar on pork. NC Penguin, you really missed out on some good BBQ. You are correct, Bessigner's has awesome burgers, all homemade, great homemade fried onion rings, but their BBQ is to die for. I am sorry you passed it up.

Its been awhile since I was ther but Stickey Fingers has some pretty good food, not as good as mine but its not bad. I do like the sauces they make though. I noticed someone on here didnt like it but I have had much worse.
