Spring here is heralded by the heady aroma the past two days of all my citrus trees a blossom. My Concord grape vines are showing the first signs of new life since last November as are the peach and plum trees. I guess those 90 to 100 degree temps the previous two weeks didn't hurt the process any.

I'm very generous when looking for signs of spring. I declared spring about an hour ago while out on my deck having coffee and cigar and noticed the peepers had apparently woken up last night. There chirping was music to my ears. Now hoping for the saturated ground to dry out enough to be able to till the garden. Planting tomatoes is a long way off, but its time for onions, spinach, radishes, and lettuce.

Jack, We always worried when we saw the Apricots and Plums start to bud and bloom this early. On the other side of the mountain a frost right about April 1st could hurt them a lot. Here in Louisville we are on about the same seasonal timeline that you are. Our plums have tiny green spots that will be the early leaves and buds shortly. The Apricot buds are swelling up and will open in a week or so . I love the Popcorn appearance of the Plum and Apricot trees. Many of the Apples are getting the fuzzy grey/green end buds that signify the start of the growing season for them. Janet got all the snow peas and lettuce in over the weekend. It has been pretty wet lately, but Spring appears to be arriving right on time!

The Bradford Pear trees are almost totally in bloom with their white blossoms. I see the return of the little birds.....bee's are buzzing around, And of course, the yellow sheen on my car, and the itching of my nose is back!

I hate to have to be the bearer of sad tidings, but tomorrow, March 21, is the first day of spring this year.

What is really strange is that I am in Spokane Washington today which is pretty far north and everything here is beginning to bloom and bud out. I guess it is in Knoxville. I will know tomorrow as I get back home then. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

I see it listed as: 2007-03-21 00:09 So, at 9 seconds after midnight, it is officially the vernal equinox. But then again, I also see this.. The original Earth Day, on the March equinox Earth Day 2007 MARCH 20, 2007 at 8:07 PM EDT (Eastern Daylight Time) or 12:07 UTC March 21 (Greenwich, England) Guess it depends on where ya live... Michael where do you live ? Guam?........... Tuesday, March 20, 2007, is the date recognized this year (March 21 in some years) but not this year Michael. Spring is recognized because on March 20, at precisely 8:07 p.m. EDT (which is 7:07 p.m. CDT) the sun will cross directly over the Earth’s equator. This moment is known as the vernal equinox in the Northern Hemisphere. For the Southern Hemisphere, this is the moment of the autumnal equinox. Equinox means “equal night.” Translated literally, equinox means “equal night.” Because the sun is positioned above the equator, day and night are about equal in length all over the world during the equinoxes. A second equinox occurs each year on Sept. 22 or 23 and in 2007, it will be on Sept. 23 at 5:51 a.m. EDT. This date will mark the autumnal equinox in the Northern Hemisphere and the vernal equinox in the Southern (vernal denotes “spring”).

A sure sign of Spring - pine pollen covering all the cars in a thin, green film, but on a happier note, our Ponchatoula strawberries are going strong.

I had to revive this, as tonight was my first sighting of the fireflies! Usually, they are out a bit before this, but the weather this spring has been odd. Extremely windy and cool days and nights. But I think the warmer temps have finally settled in and its such fun to see the fireflies blinking off and on in the dusk!

Ooooh! I wish we had fireflies. But we do have grasshoppers the size of your forefinger. Jealous now, aren't you? I am so very afraid of grasshoppers.

Oh what fond memories you bring back to my heart. I grew up in NJ and we called them, lightning bugs. I have been in CA for 20 years now, and we don't have them out here, for whatever reason. Thinking about lightning bugs, makes me feel like a kid, again. Thanks for bringing this up! Hope Spring is blooming where all of you are! It is Spring and Summer all year 'long here in CA, with lots of rain in Winter!

We won't see Fireflies/Lightening Bugs til the evenings stay quite warm ...not yet this year. We are past those early Spring signs, and into mainstream Spring Beauty. Our Flower timing seems to open the Dafodils early, then the Tulips, Then the Iris ( Right after Derby weekend), Then the DayLilies to welcome the Summer. As some of you know Janet loves the flower patches around the house. We discovered a new (to us) Iris yesterday while digging out some older bulbs. Hidden in a bunch of frilly blue-whites was this Golden Beauty. We will isolate it in the fall and hope to get some splits off of it to expand this color with our other yellow-gold combinations next year.

DD, Running a bit lower today... High may reach 70 today, 80 tomorrow, and 85 on Sunday, then back into the 70's for a few days. While I do miss the ability to plan far ahead for an outdoor event like a family picnic, I must admit the rolling changes of temperature that come with the passing of Warm and Cold fronts keep us alert to the short-range forecasts !!

"if you like today your going to love tomorrow" yesterday was just like the day before ....and today is going to be just like its going to be tomorrow and the same every day after............. and if I wanted to plan a picnic sometime in the next 365 days, I fear not that it will be spoiled by rain cuz for sure it will be just as beautiful as the sun filled day it is today ........ God you have to love living in San Jose..................... The TV weatherman need not be a meteorologist and his rhetoric is as boring as a Democrat running for president............ If I want rain I can drive to Oregon.........if I want snow I can drive to Lake Tahoe........... if I want cool and fogy I can drive the 50 miles to San Francisco............. If I want to smell the roses I can stay home in San Jose.................
