STEAK AND SHAKE

Does anyone know if Steak and Shake is still around? I used to go to one in Springfield, MO (early 80's.) Great burgers and the shakes were to die for, but memory is fuzzy, didn't they also have real thin shoestrings and great baked beans?

Yeah, they're still around. And for some unknown and incomprehensible reason, they were actually the featured restaurant on the home page a while back (something I still don't get). The shakes are still great, but the rest of their food is pretty abysmal. The only good thing I can say for them is they make the food to order (thus negating the concept of "fast food", but at least it's fresh) and they're open 24/7.

Yes! Closest one to me is 35 miles away, but a lot more in Tallahassee & central/ south Florida.... definitely a good time for a steakburger now!

Horrible chain. Unless, of course, you enjoy crispy-critter burgers, terrible service and high prices.

thanks for the link and feedback. Seems like they have a similar concept to In and Out Burgers, i.e. everything fresh, assembly line setup, so on. Some think they suck and some think they're great, wonder if that is a regional thing? According to the website these restaurants are all over the midwest, south, and eastern parts of the states. Since they are franchised that can lead to disparity between restaurants as well. one owner in Springfield runs a tight ship, another owner in Acron maybe not so tight...

Since there aren't any close to me, I always enjoy a meal there when out on vacation. I usually get the Frisco melt on sourdough bread. The side by side shakes are tasty and a decent value. Going to Florida next week, so it's time to catch up on some chains that aren't in New England: Sonic Steak-N-Shake Chick Fil-A Waffle House Long John Silvers

I am no fan of chains, but as chains go, this is one of the better ones. Three things I like: 1) Open 24 Hours 2) Very good milkshakes, with a huge variety to choose from. Personal favorite is the mint chocolate chip shake. 3) As far as I know, it is the only place in Pittsburgh where I can get Cincinnati five way chili. While it is no Camp Washington or Blue Ash Chili, it will satisfy my frequent cravings for five way.

Add also, IMO, they are very clean (at least the ones I go to), my spouse can get a fresh salad unlike most FF places, and fountain cherry cokes.

We eat there about twice a month but ONLY when they have coupons in our local paper. Other than that they are way to expensive!! On the other hand, since Culver's went in here, SNS is an afterthought most times.

Both patties came dry as sawdust and twice as cooked. And it's no wonder. I've watched the way they cook the things. They put a board on top of them to press any fat out. I went the first time because I;d heard good tings about Steak and Shake. I went the second time because I figured the food and service the first time might have had to do with the fact that it was brand new. I took my grandson another time, and there'd been no change. So, after that, whenever I would take my grandson he would order something to eat and I'd just have coffee.

CSD, Grampa Label, & cousin Irwin at a downstate Illinois Steak and Shake on our way to Springfield, IL. Irwin's the first customer at the counter on the right, Grandpa Label is the elderly man with the hat and I'm next to him with the black horned rimmed glasses. I still like their orange freezes and chocolate malts. CSD

Real good picture. The waitess is a study in something. She's got a sort of reverse Mona Lisa thing going on. Yeah, life isn't easy, but it looks like she could break into a smile at any moment. It'd be interesting to see what an artist could do with it in oils. Not too much color, though...just a hint. Maybe sepia and a little blue. Quite a resemblance between you and your cousin. Harold Lloyd fan? The Bear

Steak and Shake is good once in a while, They are all over Illinois it seems like. They have great shakes, decent burgers, as long as you order a double or better. I love their shoestring fries, and I could bathe in Orange Freeze. Their prices are a little high, higher than fast food anyway, but no more than you would pay at any other sit down style restaurant (Denny's Perkins Bob Evan's etc). Their chili is a bit of an anomaly. The chili itself is closer to traditional chili, but they serve it in the Cincinatti style (3,4,5 way). Don't get me wrong, I like their chili, it's just clearly not Cincinatti chili. As chains go Steak and Shake is ok if you go to a good one.

I like their chili, but hate their fries.. Not into shoestrings, dont like the burgers either. I used to hit it about 2 Am just for some chili. Back home in Florida, it was a huge hangout for the cops in the wee hours. This one was located on a busy stretch of road where lots of people come home from the bars at the beach... Go figure!

Buffetbuster, I seem to have read that Skyline Chili was planning on expanding into Pittsburgh a while back. Unfortunately that never happened. The closest Skylines to the Steel City are four locations in the Cleveland area at http://www.skylinechili.com/locations.php#cleveland (three if you consider one is in Mansfield, an hour southwest of C-Town on I-71). I hope that helps.

I drove to Dallas a few weeks ago to eat at a Steak and Shake on the recommendation of a co-worker. I was not impressed. The shake was great but the food was generic burger joint fare. long dog don't forget to add Krystal Burger to the list if you don't have one in New England. joe

I grew up with Steak 'n Shake (south St. Louis county) and love to go there when we go back home. The chili 3way and orange freeze are my faves. Of course it could be the nostalgia--way back in the old high school days all us young trouble makers would "Cruise Steak" on the weekends. Heard tell they were putting one in here (The Woodlands, TX--north of Houston), but that's been awhile, so maybe not. Oh well, sigh. Seems like alot of you didn't like it much anyway. Now me--I'd go right now if I could. Happy steakburgering to all you lucky enough to have one close by.

They have one in Greensboro, NC I hit sometimes. I think they're great, if fast food. My brother's first job was washing dishes there. Maybe it is nostalgia. I grew up near what I think was the first in the chain, in Bloomington, Il. Whenever I go back, my dad and I eat there. I grew to like the fries. And the hot fudge sundaes.

I, too, thought the one in Greensboro was pretty good. As did my wife. Better than the waffle houses in that area that's for sure!

We are supposed to have one open just north of me in Georgetown, TX, sometime next year. I hope so. Like I said, I still like their chili.

I can't recall the name of a Chinese restaurant we used to go to in Springfield but it served some great Cashew Chicken. Haven't found it served like that anywhere else. Do you know the place I'm referring to? Seems like it was down in the southern part of town on a major east-west street.

We had a great one in Tampa that had awesome burgers and (of course) shakes. I really missed that place when we moved!! There's one in Columbus that's not good. Average at best food and consistently the worst service I've seen at a restaurant of this type.

DESERT DOG I am from Springfield Hi....I buzzed around the Glenstone and StLouis St locations many a nights in my 68 Camaro! They are still in Spfld, in fact my Dad put in the plumbing in the Spfld locations when they were originally built. They are also open in the Kansas City area and Lawrence Ks.
