SW Colorado & NW New Mexico Wed, 09/22/04 1:20 PM (permalink)
I am headed for Durango, CO in a few weeks for vacation. I have got the main events planned; train trips, mine tours, and Mesa Verde, however i have not a clue about where to eat. I will be in Durango, Creede, Cortez, Silverton, Pagosa Springs, and Alamosa, CO and Farmington, Dulce and Chama, NM. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris

You must go to the Santuario at Chimayo. It is a wonderful place. In Santa Fe and ABQ, eat at Garduno's Chili Packing Company. Authentic Mexican food, rich flavors, firey hot or not which ever your taste prefers. Their Silver Margaritas are to die for. Don't forget dessert they serve a fantastic dessert of ice cream and strawberries in a warm sopapilla. BEST Mexican food in Southwest.

Durango: Try the brisket at Serious Texas BBQ on HWY 550 on the way out of town towards Silverton. The Durango Diner is also supposed to be good but I have never been.

Alamosa: Oscar's is a good Mexican joint. (Great Sand Dunes was just elevated to a National Park. Highly recommended.)

Chimayo: Leona's near the Santuario is very good. (I second Trinityhill's suggestion on the Santuario.)

I grew up in Farmington and graduated from college in Durango - a long time ago. The Ore House in Durango still gets good recommendations and there is a brew pub in Farmington on the SE corner of Orchard and Main in an old two story brick building that housed a drug store for most of its existence. I haven't been back in several years, but I am always following the various message boards when someone asks or reports on the area you are about to visit.
