Sabrett hot dogs WITH casing--where?

Driving down from Nova Scotia to NYC in June (hopefully), and want to pick up a year's supply of Sabrett hot dogs with casings.  Does anyone know a place where I can find these, preferably in Manhattan but will stop anywhere along the I-95 corridor if need be?

Last time I was in NYC, I checked a bunch of supermarkets near my place, and while most had the skinless Sabrett, none had the ones with the casings.

Thanks!

Yes, you may, and I've been there :)  But they just have links to places that will mail franks using two-day or overnight shipping.  I'd rather pop into a place on my way back to Nova Scotia and pick them up in-store.

    Thanks though!

I'm just curious. Will you be driving an RV with a fridge? Otherwise, how will you keep them cold during the drive back?

Good luck with your search. We have them for sale in Dallas at Central Market with the natural casing. Just in case you want to drive this far to get them.

Nope...I'm hoping to just drive them back in a huge cooler with lots of ice, kept restocked as necessary as we go.  Overnight we'll be staying at a hotel with a freezer.

This might help. Go to their website listed above by "boyardee65" and click on "brokers".
Find a broker near where you are going and write or call to ask who in that particular area sells Sabrett dogs in the natural casing. Worth a try.

This place carries Sabrett natural casing dogs in 5lb packs.  They're in Long Island.

Bj's and Costco both carry the Sabrett natural casing hotdogs, also most ShopRites and PathMark carry them as well.

New Rochelle and Bronx 2009/04/02 20:16:33 (permalink)
A distributor just north of New York City:
    Sabrett of New Rochelle
    343 North Avenue
    New Rochelle, NY 10801
    914-355-5304

The one off Fordham Road in the Bronx closed up. There is also a food distributor in the Bronx that advertises in the free pennysavers. He sells a full line of Sabrett cart supplies including natural casing. He is located on a cul-de-sac. Unfortunately, I can't remember the name. Will post his name when I find it. He is near I-95.

Ignore the 'Wholesale Only' sign. Most will give you a day pass with a cock-and-bull story. Tell them it is for a gathering of Acadians students who came to see New York, since they may want to see your drivers license.
EDIT: The Restaurant Depot in Maspeth, Queens now carries hot dog and hamburger buns baked by Sabrett/Marathon in Fair Lawn, NJ.

Retail wise, most Stop & Shop supermarkets along the I-95 corridor carry retail packs of Sabrett NC in the summer. They are sold by weight, currently $5.49 a pound. Ouch.

Dolly, the NC ones I was talking about come 6 or 7 in a package with no UPC printed on the plastic. The label says Bronx, NY, which is where the plant is physically located. The store's meat department puts its usual weighed label on it. The skinless come 8 to a 1 pound package with a UPC symbol. They are good, but lack the snap of the NC.

You have to slowly heat these NC's. I heat in an electric fry pan at 200-250 degrees for an hour. The idea is not to burst the casing. You can also simmer them in "dirty water".  Serve them on Sara Lee Premium White frankfurter buns, unless you can get food service buns locally.

OK, here is the name of the Sabrett distributor in the Bronx:

    Giordano's Big G
    1554 Paulding Avenue
    Bronx, NY 10462
    718-892-7798

He is about a mile west of I-95. Get a map from superpages.com, for his warehouse is locked in by railroad tracks. Old skool food distributor.

Or, just try and find Thumann's "pushcart" hot dogs in the natural casing. I Used to love Sabrett. Thought it was the best. Thumann's is much better!! Not as salty with, a garlicky snap and a texture similar to veal sausage.

Are you referring to the all beef or the beef and pork Thumann's? Two altogether different animals. The Thumann's beef dog isn't as salty and has less garlic than a Sabrett. Depends on your taste, but I prefer Sabrett for a beef dog. The Thumann's beef dog is not similar to veal sausage. The beef/pork Thumann's is more like a veal sausage than their beef dog. But the Thumann's beef/pork has no garlic. In my opinion this dog is much better then Sabrett's beef/pork dog.

I just found the web site of the distributor in New Rochelle. These types of distributorships were once plentiful in the NYC area. Some of them also served food, as this one. Look at the slide show of photographs on the home page of all the Sabrett's products ready to put into an ice chest. This distributor is off I-95 in New Rochelle, NY:

This Stina Provisions looks like a neat place to visit and have a dog or three. Doubtless, they'll be fresh. Surprised I never heard of it.

I found the history of Giordano's fascinating. IIRC, the on-street parking is free. There are not too many places around here that sell wholesale and will also make up a party platter or sandwich for you. Its an interesting place to visit in its own right.

I wonder if Stina Provisions (which I had never heard of until the June '09 post above) has closed or moved. The link is dead, and some Google results now give an address of 34 Alden Court in Scarsdale, but it's listed as a bakery. No web site.

He also has a store on Ebay.

Thanks David. BTW, your June link seems to be working again (and gives me the same page as the link you just posted). I had tried it a couple of times over the past few days and it was a dead end.

The reason I'm bringing all this up is I'm probably heading up that way later next week and I dug out my notes on some stops to make, time permitting. If I do get there I'll report back.
