Salem (MA) Diner Re-Opened

Hi all,
I have now twice attempted to try the food at the Salem Diner, but it has not been open (though it has an "open" sign in the window). This time (lunch today) it really looked deserted to me. Maybe tomorrow I will go peer into the windows to see if there are any signs of life. I might try calling too.

Anyone know the scoop?

Thanks.

I was curious about this, so I went ahead and called. They are still open, but they close at 2:00. Did you get there after 2:00?

I got there at about 10 past 2. They used to open til 8pm...
The ladies at the Driftwood told me yesterday that it's open so I just gotta get to breakfast. I'll "trip report" it with The Driftwood and maybe another spot or two round here.

    Thanks BB!

YAY! I got there today at 1pm. Will put all in report, took loads of pics.

BUT... fyi: They have been bought and the new owner takes over the end of this month (around the 22nd they think). They will CLOSE for renovations, supposedly only for a week though.

Sad, because who knows what they will do - hopefully not too much. It's currently almost untouched (since 1947 apparently). The current owner is ill and had to sell. I had a great long chat with a waitress & a cook there today.

    Thanks for your help!

p.s. BB - that day I went and it looked totally closed? It was closed early (because of the power plant accident in Salem I think). At least they said they closed because they lost all their power at about 1pm that day. Funny thing... they would have been there still cleaning that day had they not shut early.

Mark, it's not closed now but will do so for renovations (temporarily) late this month.

Thanks for that reminder, a friend of mine in Salem loves Reds. I have not made it there yet!

    Cecif and Mark;

I want to try the Salem Diner, thanks for posting about it...but what can you tell me about Reds and the Driftwood? I am not familiar with either of those places.

I've been to Red's for breakfast a few years back. A friend told me about their homemade corned beef hash, but I didn't think it was anything to crow about -- very good but not great, from a RF point of view. Check it for yourself: http://www.redssandwichshop.com/

I love the food and the atmosphere. The place is so small, they seem to make your breakfast at your table ! Red's has lots of great history. I used to be a tavern during the Revolutionary War days.
Love the Omlettes, and the Hash ! I think it is the cobination of the two things that makes it my favorite breakfast joint !

Dagnabit! Turns out I looked for it & I have been to Red's... but before you think I'm nuts, fyi it was several years ago and I was going along with a group and no one said where we were going and I just went with the flow. I remember a great atmosphere, and quite the crowd, but I don't remember anything about the food! As an RFer, y'all might take that to mean not bad not great, but okay/good (not a hash fan so can't comment on that...).

Wistah, I'll put the link here as soon as I finish loading and linking the photos. My "trip report" covers The Driftwood and the Salem Diner. Also, I'm going to "cheat" and add a tiny bit from my weekend at the Cape/South Shore. Keep an eye on this space. Hope to finish by mid-day tomorrow.

I finally made it to the Salem Diner, which re-opened in December or January (not sure which).

The new management changed some things, but the food seems as good as ever. (Maybe because I recognize the guys on the grill?!?!) One waitress was the same, the other might well be the owner or his wife. New tile on the floor and at the counter seats (bummer, I liked the old stuff better, oh well). The cool old signs are gone, but there are new "white boards", which I am sure are easier to put specials on.

    New menu

    New look

Same old yummy grilled cheese (so good we ordered a second each!)

And they gave us little chocolates with our bill - so that was nice too! Two thumbs up.
