Salted (caramel) ice cream

Today my "beloved" (?) Shake Shack featured Salty Caramel Custard. They also have a mix-in of salted peanuts. I was thinking about those pretzel cones that also used to be sold in Pennsylvania and realized that salt, sugar and cream make a nice combo. Does anyone else know of Salted ???? Flavor Ice creams? How is it?

Sounds good to me, when I make ice cream at home I always like to get a small bit of the salty water on the ice cream.

I like Tabasco Habanaro on vanilla ice cream more than I like vanilla ice cream plain. Is this on topic?

NYNM, If you ever find yourself in Columbus, OH, I recommend searching out Jeni's Ice Cream in the Northern Market, off of High St. Their salted caramel has always been my favorite flavor of theirs (they pride themselves on using sea-salt, if that matters to you). Their jalapeno ice cream is supposed to be excellent as well, but I've never had that one. So, yeah, if Shake Shack features their Salty Caramel Custard again, I'd say go for it.

How is it? I am hard pressed to find any chocolate recipe that does not have some salt in it. I bet if you asked for the ingredients of their vanilla, you would find some trace amounts of it there too. mark

When I was a youngster at YMCA camp in the Berkshires we had to help the cook churn ice cream in a big old hand operated machine. One thing I remeber was that there were always bts of rock salt scattered thru the ice cream and how great that made the taste of the vanilla/banana ice cream all the better. I dont think the salt got in there on purpose, I think it was just a serendipitous accident. cheers, John

oh yes, i second checking out jenni's in columbus. it is the best ice cream ive ever had. even better than their "salted caramel" is their "gravel road" , which has the addition of chopped roasted almonds to the salted caramel. the combination of sugar and salt is like some kind of crazy drug, it's very hard to stop eating it
