Sam is graduating and going away Mon, 06/4/12 3:13 PM (permalink)
My son Sam is graduating from high school this week. He had to work hard to do this but it is finally a reality. He will be leaving in a month to move to southern california. he will attend junior college there and live with his birth family. Trudy and i will be without him in town for the first time since we have known each other. I will miss him terribly and it will certainly be a different dynamic. I know all the young birds leave the nest but that does not make it any easier. His birth mother and his brother and sister wii be coming to graduation and he will leaving for a trip to Arizona with new aunts and uncles a few days later.

First, congratulations to Sam on his, achievement. Second, congratulations on your great success as parents.

They always leave. At least, they always leave when they've been reared by thoughtful, supportive parents who have made it possible for them to succeed.

Just think how lucky we are to have the internet, texting, facebook, skype, etc. to keep in touch.  Sure you will miss him, but just imagine if you had to wait for him to write you a letter

Just remember that he would not have graduated without the tremendous job that you and Trudy have done in raising him.  Congratulations to Sam!

Congratulations to Sam!  I know that you and Trudy will miss him terribly........but he'll be back.  Trust me.  After 56 years on the road and living everywhere, "home" will always be "home".

I am so happy and so sad for you at the same time! My son Kyle, who has Asperger's syndrome, just recently announced to me that, this fall, will be a HS senior, a voter in the next election, will go to college and then move out on his own. Truthfully, I am in a panic, but also so proud! I also told him not to be so much in a hurry!

                        Jim,
You and Trudy have done a great job bringing Sam to the point where he can make important decisions for himself. He knows how much you folks love him and over the coming years the whole 'extended family' that is so new to him now will settle into a mellower status with time for all to share.
Meantime , looks like you may have some SoCal roadtrips in your future !  God Bless you and your family, my friend.

I have not been able to comment, as your post made me a bit sad. However, know Sam loves you; you and Trudy gave him a good life and he will not forget that.I am absolutely sure of that. I look forward to you sharing his new adventures with us, as he will share with you.

                            Jim,
As with Ann above, I too held off replying as your post at first seemed sad. Upon reflection however, I am sure Sam still has many gaps to fill in, and some questions unanswered. His going off to college will ultimately make your relationship with him even stronger. At least for awhile now you and Trudy wont have to hide all those porn videos anymore. Ha Ha.

                            Best to You,Trudy,and Sam.

Thank you all for your kind words. Sam has been gone for a week and took a trip to the grand canyon with his aunt and uncles and cousins. he is now spending time with his birth family  and trudy and i are getting a brief look at our new life. I am still a little sad , mostlybecause i have not quite had the time to process and there are still a lot of things to do before the move happens.

Sam, trudy and I will fly to southern california this morning. sam has spent the last three weeks saying good bye to friends, playing sports, going to farewell bashes. Tomorrow his new life starts. he will be taking his california driver permit test monday, trudy and i will meet the birth family relatives, sunday and Sam and i will be going to an Angels game Saturday. The tears come far too easily but I am pleased he has grown to a fine young man who made a lot of friends the past year and who has a whole world ahead of him. Trudy and i have found a goodly number of roadfood places to visit during our time.there. Thanks to all of you who have written such nice things and i will write a follow up sometime in the next couple of weeks.

My tears flow with yours........Bob and I were unable to have children, and some of our nieces, nephews and friends kids have become very important to us.When they grow up and leave, it can/has been heart breaking.....
