Sam's Southern Eatery

Anyone ever hear of it?

There's one in Sherman, Texas and I went there several times.  I couldn't get enough of it.

When I went in, I thought it was a local place but when I saw the menu, I found out it's a chain in 5 Southern states.

The shrimp were the best I've ever had.  I first had the order of 6 and then 8.

Someone else had the grilled catfish.  I've never heard of grilling it.  I was given a filet and it was very good.

Canned green beans and red beans similar to Popeye's and I was in my element.

Several times.  Almost once a day for a couple of weeks.

I want one in Marina del Rey!

Once I get a new desktop computer I'll post pictures.  I have no idea how to use this Mac laptop.

Mar, We had a Sam's Southern Eatery in Longview and one in Marshall that were close to us. We ate at the Longview location a few times. The jumbo shrimp were really good as were the fish and oysters. The sides were just OK. The Longview location has closed and I think the Marshall location has also (we ate there also as it was in the mall). l think it was bad mgmt. The last few times we went the cleanliness and service were not very good. I'm glad you had a good experience there. Did you make it to The Pecan Lodge while in Tx. We went over spring break and it was excellent again. The kids loved it and enough food for two leftover meals.

Jim, if you hang around the Sherman area during the day, you could always have dinner at Huck's.... the best catfish in the State of Texas.  It's north of town right off of 75.  I've reviewed Huck's here.  (or go to the Choctaw Casino in Oklahoma and hit Huck's on the way back home)

Texascajun is correct about the sides at Sam's.  Canned green beans and corn, but I really liked the red beans and rice.  Warning.... pork in the red beans.

They also grill instead of fry everything they serve.
Not the best presentation or setup, but it's about the food!

PS...  I hit a couple of the places you told me about along Preston and when my new computer arrives (and I figure out W8.1) I will be posting about it.  I came home to a completely crashed home computer.  Operating System wasn't worth repairing and I'm hoping to recover a lot of the data from the hard drive.

TC...  I wanted to go to Pecan Lodge but it was closed.  They're relocating.

Maybe in June!  I need to give the new car a MPG distance test.

Well, I certainly agree with Mar52 about the shrimp!  Here's my 8 piece lunch; delicious as they were I could only eat 6 of them.  Mrs. Metro had the other 2 and was mightily pleased.  The red beans and rice were every bit as good as Popeye's USED to make.

Mrs. Metro had the grilled fish Po' Boy.  As she is very fastidious, I was not allowed to unwrap it for a better picture.  She did enjoy it, but liked my shrimp better.  The fries were EXCELLENT!

The shrimp were huge  - way beyond what I was expecting.  I'd say they were at least #16's, maybe even #14's.  Keeping in mind that my hand takes a fitted size 14 glove (XXXL) and that my skinny fingers take a size 12 ring, check out the generous size of these babies:

And, the waitress assures me that they come in shell-on from the Louisiana Gulf.

As this location of Sam's is rather homely - it's set in a building which has housed several failed restaurants - we never would have thought of stopping had it not been for Mar52's kind words about it.  Thanks, Mar!

Even though it is a 74 mile round trip from Casa Jim & Wife we shall return!

Next time we'll share a 12 piece shrimp dinner - more than enough to satisfy.

    They ARE Awesome!

Do not buy the gizzards.  I threw them out after biting in to (or trying to bite in to) w of them.  Overcooked rubber nuggets.

But I did eat the hush puppies.

I want more of those shrimp!

The prices are also extremely reasonable.

I was able to eat 8 of those shrimp because I didn't bother with fries.

    Jealous!

BTW: the breading on the shrimp is very thin ...  and tasty!

On my first trip there I ordered the Fried Green Tomatoes.  I'd never had them before.

Now I can say I've had them.
    Not my thing.

    I wondered about that, too.

I saw a basket of those that someone at the next table ordered.

SMALL shrimp, but a lot of them.

    Stick with #25 or #26

    Trust me!

I had lunch at the Sam's in Dallas.  Same great food.  I had six fried shrimp and a double order of the red beans & rice as my sides.

Again, if you didn't know it was a chain, or inquired, you'd never suspect that it was.  It is in a repurposed FF joint, probably a former BK.  As I was alone, the location - a little north of the intersection of MLK, Jr. and Malcolm X Bvds. - didn't bother me.  But, had Mrs. Metro been along, I would not have been alllowed to park the car.

I once learned by early booking of a hotel that you don't stay on MLK anything. They rented by the hour!

    You are hooked!

If it wasn't 1300+ miles away...
