San Diego Roadfood Wed, 12/8/10 8:00 AM (permalink)

We will be in San Diego for two days prior to a cruise starting Dec. 24th
We will be staying in the Liberty Station area and looking for Roadfood in that vicinity.
Any suggestions for good breakfast ideas and other lunch and dinner places?
Also open to places outside the liberty station area.

I am departing San Diego right now and will be posting reviews of some excellent Taco places in the forthcoming days.  You can take a train to most of them:
    • Tacos El Gordo - Chulpa Vista
    • La Fachada - 20 25th St
    • Tacos El Paisa - 3096 National Ave

I would suggest getting a Bacon Cheeseburger, Fries and a Chocolate Shake at Hodad's in Ocean Beach.

My number one suggestion, if you like seafood, is Blue Water Seafood.  I had the best piece of fish that I've ever eaten here.

Also, just up the block from BWS, is El Indio, which has fantastic Mexican food.

Foodosaurus is right, but keep in mind that you'll most likely have to wait for a table. Hodad's is a small place, and people begin queuing up before the place opens -- in the summer, at least.

I did a fish taco survey last summer, and El Indio has one of the best fish tacos in the city.  I tried one from Blue Water Seafood next door, and it wasn't as good, but like Foodosaurus says, they do grilled fish amazingly well. I'd also recommend El Zarape in University Heights, serving the best scallop taco I've ever had.  I still dream about the doner kebab we had at The Kebab Shop downtown. And a visit to Extraordinary Desserts, also downtown, will blow your mind. Happy eating -- in one of the greatest eating cities in the country!    Chris

I also just returned from San Diego.  Not far from Liberty Station on Sports Arena Blvd. is a Du-Par's, across the street from the very popular Phil's BBQ.

You know, another thing to keep in mind while in SD is that it's developed quite a pub culture over the last 20 years. Lots of gastropub choices with interesting ales and pub foods (some traditional, some not, many excellent). The short list for these would include:

                            Ritual Tavern
                            Tornado
                            The Linkery
                            West Coast Tavern
                            Jayne's Gastropub

There's also some good, old school, dive bars with good food. Two that come to mind are:

NuNu's - You get your food from a hole in the back wall of the bar room. Try the breaded and fried artichoke hearts.
Turf Supper Club - Not many of these left anywhere. You grill your own steaks. More kitsch than anything, but sometimes that's worth something. Especially when that's the way its always been done.

Like so many places, many unique places (The Spice Rack, Bol Weevil, etc) have closed over the years. Too bad, but not unexpected.

Santana's on Rosecranz makes a killer burrito, and if really fresh seafood is to your liking, Point Loma seafood market has some of the best. There are literally thousands of mom and pop taco shops in San Diego and from experience they are all good.

Phil's BBQ is probably your best bet (I know they already left, but heck this thread should help for others).

The Linkery is probably a bit higher end than most traditional road food.  One thing about San Diego, simply drive around virtually any neighborhood and try and local taco stand....they're almost all good and at about $5, one of the best values around.
