I am going to San Juan late next week for a conference.  I'll have very limited free time -- Friday afternoon and evening, and perhaps Saturday morning (very early) before I depart.

Staying at the conference hotel (Caribe Hilton), but I do want to visit Old San Juan.  I've never been to Puerto Rico before (though I have been to Jamaica and the Dominican Republic).

I searched this forum and found two old threads -- one from 2007 and one from 2003.

Any new suggestions or modifications?  Favorites seem to be La Bombonera and Cafeteria Mallorca.

And just FYI -- I am not a burger fan (I know! I know!), so a great burger is not a draw for me.

The Metropole in Isla Verdi, they also have a second location that may be closer to the Caribe Hilton, not sure where, has excellent Cuban / PR food.

I liked El Patio de Sam in old San Juan for Mofongo.

I'd recommend Tapas in an old-world syle hotel up near the fort:
              http://www.elconvento.com/dining/el_picoteo.cfm

              The hotel is darn nice:
              http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g147320-d148043-Reviews-El_Convento_Hotel-San_Juan_Puerto_Rico.html

And while not roadfood, because it is tapas you can get one or two things then leave without busting the budget.

The dining is in an open-air hotel courtyard, but up on a balcony overlooking it all.  The food was good, but really you are there for the experience.

I'm sure this is too late for the OP's trip but maybe helps someone else.

Thanks for the recommendation.  It is too late for me, but I'm happy to get the information about that hotel. I'd read about it in The Rough Guide and was intrigued.  Unfortunately, I was stuck at the Caribe Hilton, the conference hotel.

The Parrot Club in Old San Juan was fantastic, and I highly recommend it.
