Sanctioning Body Responsibilities

i posted this one on the cookshack and national bbq forums but i was curious what a bunch of roadfooders would think. the promotor of the bbq comp here in jacksonville went belly up and owes over 100k. all the checks bounced. since this contest would have only been a 30 min tow from me i was kind of upset since this could have put jacksonville on the bbq map (no i didn't enter. the form was a joke. i couldn't bring in beer-had to buy it from him--but worse after all the list of things you could not do you could vend with out an license and we pay over 300 a year for our mfd certificate so that was a red flag.) ok my thinking goes like this; 1- if the florida bbq association received no funds for sanctioning this event of course they should be held harmless. 2- if the fba recieved funds then they should make all checks good and pay all competitors 17.5 cents per mile towing money. all board members should be held personally liable, as that was determined years ago by the us supreme court, and should be required to make up any shortfall that the sanctioning body may have. harsh?? perhaps but the fba gave their name to this event and due to this even though jacksonville had a shot at building something like memphis in may their lack of business ability certainly buried that and after my experience at the minneola contest i for one am not suprised jack

Sounds like a legal mess to me. I would probably chalk it off to education and the cost of getting a PHD in stuff that happens. I do not blame you for venting your frustrations and writing to the group. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

Working up to doing some BBQ comp (KCBS), so I'm not real familiar with the mechanics of that, but sanctioning agencies that handle chili cook-offs, ICS and CASI, generally are totally independent from the promoter of the event. A promoter, or more typically a charity, sets up the venue, handles advertising, health inspection, crappers, venders, etc. and the sanctioning org then comes in, handles rules, judging, prizes and whatnot that make it worth the contestants time and effort to participate. They basically provide some legitimacy and a chance to progress in whatever points or ranking system the body observes, rather than just cooking at Joe Blow's BBQ cook off. Sounds like a mess.

The sanctioning body is only sanctioning the competition aspects of the event. It is very unlikely that they would have responsibilities related to the financing of the event. The NCAA sanctions college atheletic programs, but if one of those schools goes belly up, the NCAA isn't going to pay the schools debts. Keith
