Saturday, May 16th - R.F. O'Sullivans, Boston MA

I won't be able to do the Western Mass. trip (http://www.roadfood.com/Forums/ONLY-THREE-MORE-DAYS-Western-Mass-Meat-Up-51709-m445468.aspx), but there is a lot of buzz about going to eats in Boston beforehand.

If there is enough interest, let's meet at R.F. O'Sullivans in Somerville at 5 PM tomorrow  (Saturday) so we beat the dinner crowd.  Who is interested?

If there is enough appetite, we could try that other burger place in Cambridge the Food Network says is the best in the state.

Beth, I could be wrong, but I don't think Stephen is exactly a fan of Durgin Park.

I suspect the company could make up for that.

You guys are correct, I am not a fan of Durgin Park.  Do you guys want to meet beforehand or afterwards?  Maybe I can even convince you to drop it altogether?  I can take you to much better spots that aren't flooded with tourists.

I would be open to meeting afterwards depends on how late we leave Durgin Park.
As far as abandoning Durgin Park altogether, I'll leave that up to Beth...I've always had a great meal at Durgin Park, to me it will always be the definitive classic Bostonian restaurant...True, there are many tourists who go there, but many locals go there too (Beth and her husband).....I was just at Katz's Deli in NYC a couple of weeks ago, it too was "swarming with tourists" no doubt there were certainly many, many more tourists there than locals...but the food was still outstanding.

I think we will stick with our plan since I promised Bill H his first Indian pudding!  When the large group of us Roadfooders, including buffetbuster ate there last year we ALL (about 15 of us) liked it very much, so i don't know what stephen has against it. And the wait staff was really nice.  I can't meet any earlier(kids soccer) and will prob not be up for anything after, especially shlepping to somerville or cambridge.  Sorry. If you had spoken up earlier maybe we could have arranged a Plan B, but at this point where it's tomorrow I don't want to change it.

It looks like the gang over at A Hamburger Today don't think too highly of R. F. O'Sullivan's.

It looks like it has all the makings of a great burger - 1/2 lb of meat, lovely char....but, cold cheese, poor fries, and poor execution don't sound like the makings of a winner.

Boy, that review of O'Sullivan's burger is a real letdown; the burger looked so good in the photo on another thread. Hopefully, the restaurant's management will take this constructive criticism seriously and make some badly-needed changes in the near future.

Deliciousness is certainly in the tastebuds of the reviewer here.  I met Stephen and Billyboy at O'Sullivan's on Saturday, and it was fabulous.  That was the second time I'd been, and this time was even better than the first.  It depends on what type of burger you prefer: this is a high-end, gourmet, very thick one.  I would hope that any review wouldn't keep a true RFer from trying a place!    Chris

Nope, Chris, if I ever get back to Boston, that bad review won't keep me from trying O'Sullivan's. After all, there's a number of places with very positive reviews on this site that I truly dislike; the Triple XXX Drive-In and Dyer's Hamburgers are two that immediately come to mind. Like the old saying goes, one gent's meat is another guy's poison.

I think you know me better than that!  But, those boys at AHT know their burgers pretty well.

My impression, and this is only my impression from the pics, is that if anyone orders a burger with mozzarella cheese, expect the cheese to get cold, fast.It may melt well, but doesnt stay melted. The fries , as they are hand cut, have to be served immediately. If said food sits, it may not be good.I thought these burgers looked excellent-maybe it was the service???

I believe that the cheese shown in the photo on the link is white American, not mozzarella.

Well, if it is true white american, I stand corrected. And so sorry that the burger sat for a long time-american cheese, whether yellow or white, doesnt peel off of any meat unless it has been sitting for a long time.

The second reviewer stated what each of them ordered....

"We each ordered the regular cheeseburger (mine with cheddar, Kenji's with American) which comes with lettuce, tomato, sliced onion and pickles."

This was the source of my information on white American.  Personally, if given the choice of a processed cheese product or an authentic cheddar, I would have gone with the cheddar, but you can't fault a guy for liking what he likes.
