Sauce on the Lamb Platters in New York City..

I wasn't exactly sure what forum to post this in. I go to New York City on occasion, lately a lot, due to work. I always get a lamb and rice platter. They're $5. They include this wonderful white sauce on top. I was wondering if anyone knew what it is exactly. It doesn't taste like normal Gyro tzatziki sauce. This one is mayonaisse based I believe, but what else is in it I'm not sure. I always get extra on mine.

Your guess is as good as mine. They always seem to be a bit dodgy about it whenever I ask. I think of it as a Tzatziki meets Ranch (minus the dill). Is it a cart you usually go to? Where is it located?

I don't go to one single cart. There's a few that I frequent. They all taste the same. I've never tried to ask them what's in the sauce, though. Lately I've been noticing a hint of cinnamon / sweetness. I think that's on the meat, though. I probably never noticed the sweetness before because I haven't been getting hot sauce lately. The white sauce is enough to upset my tummy for the train ride home, and the hot sauce makes it even worse.. even though I love it all. The carts I usually go to are right near Penn Station when you go out on 7th and 32nd. The other ones are right outside my showroom, which is 7th and 39th I believe at the fashion district, right next to that "big button and needle" statue. I wonder where one gets a cart like that.. a lot of them seem to have the same menu, graphics, taste, etc. I bet you have to be ethnic to get one.. a white guy like me can't just buy one. I wonder why you only see them in the city.

There is a traditional garlic sauce used on dishes like you describe...it is usually just lots of garlic, salt, lemon juice, and oil, blended into a mayonnaise like consistency. It is Lebanese in origin.

I have made the cucumber garlic sauce before. One time it came out amazing. I've never been able to recreate that again.

If its a whitish suace with a strong garlic taste it might be a version of aoli. Pretty simple to make.

Yeah that sounds like a recipe for some sort of tzatziki. The sauce in the city does not have cucumber that I can taste and is mayonnaise based. fabulousoyster 1 cup Sour cream, 1/2 cucumber, halved, seeded, not peeled, grated FINELY and squeezed, 1 clove garlic MINCED, dash salt, pepper, 1 tsp red wine vinegar. MIX ALL WELL, refrigerate
