I don't much care for Sauerkraut, but a good friend of mine is pastor of the Catholic parish in Waynesville, and his church ladies make outstanding cabbage rolls as an alternative to the 'kraut. Exceptionally good, in fact.

In the 6th picture down is a cabbage roll booth. I took the picture because they had a long line the whole time I was there. In the picture, the line is actually short! JohnA~ The pizza really isn't as strange as sauerkraut brownies and cookies!!

Back a few years when we were using Janet's Bread Machine a lot, we used a recipe for Saurkraut Bread. It was outstanding. The fraut gave it a wonderful body and texture but did not overpower the flavor with cabbage tastes.

We are having sauerkraut topped brats tonight( Bobs youngest brother is on a weekend leave from Great Lakes Naval)and one of the best dishes my Mom made was baking pork chops atop sauerkraut.I bet that bread was good, too, Al.Might be able to find that up here somewhere...we have a town south of us that is called Franksville-all they do is make Franks sauerkraut.i am sure their festival ( as they have every year) is full of recipes and concessions.I would like to attend one year for fun!

Nice report Soozycue.. But I agree with everyone else on the - Kraut Pizza.. Love my Kraut, but there are limits as to what I'll use it on. Pizza not being one of them. And Al, my curiosity was peaked when you mentioned the Kraut Bread, and Morningglory, Thanks for posting them recipes.. (Finally have a bread machine to play with, now to see what sort of disasters or fires one can create with that toy... Was going to start out with Jalapeno bread, but might as well get it broke in with something simple).

Actually, Waynesville, OH is a wonderful town, and sauerkraut works well in a lot of foods. Sauerkraut pizza is not as bad as it sounds. There used to be a Germantown Pizza place in Cincinnati that had a sauerkraut pizza on it's regular menu. Sauerkraut pasta? Haven't tried it. Any takers?

I went to this a couple times when I lived in southwest Ohio. The German Sundae's are interesting, but the cabbage rolls served by the ladies of the church are the best. Basically, it's a cabbage roll, quite a standard version, lots of garlic, too, but they cook it on a bed of kraut; tomato juice is added for moisture and flavor as well. Very very good. Great fall or winter food.
