I'm fortunate that here in Podunk Far Eastern WVa that I've got 2 really good family run sub shops within 2 miles of home. A third that does hot home style cookin as well as subs is about 11 miles away. The far one makes subs so large that I only order a half. They have a ton of meat and cheese plus will run it through the garden if you like.

I used to like some of their soups. You could get soup for $1.69 and get as many refill as you wanted (it was self serve). I guess a lot of people did that because one time when I went there were signs saying only one refill on soup. They closed in our town about a year ago but are still open in neighboring town.

Several years ago, Schlotzsky's were very good. I do not know what happened. They just closed on Knoxville locations and Hardee's bought it and remodeled it.

At one time their product was very good. I just guess management or product got to them.

Yes, Paul. A decade ago I remember eating in a Schlotzky's in Berkeley just a block outside UC's Sather Gate. It was packed with students and the place was good enough that I didn't realize it was a chain.

But they sure have been different recently. It's been so long since I got near the one here in Green Valley that I didn't realize it had closed a month or so ago. The rumor mill says an independent coffee and pastry purveyor is moving in. I can only hope, but I'm not encouraged by the fact that the "For Lease" sign is still up. We also are getting a CKE outlet, in our case not Hardee's but Carl's Jr., but it's not going into the Schlotzky's location.

This sounds like a poor management problem.
The location by McCarthur Park in downtown San Francisco came and went in a flash in the '90s while another place like it has endured in that spot.

Our Schlotzsky's died a couple of years ago and was replaced by a chain called Backyard Burgers which also went belly up recently. We do have a running joke around here that our town is where "restaurants go to die"

Still a schlots here in johnson city but their location is poor. Brand new backyard burgers also. Not to bad when the food is fresh.
