Apparently, even our Canadian friends fear the chain-ization of their beloved treasures.  Franchising had been rumored for some time - and, especially when someone is plunking down that kind of coin for the operation, you have to wonder how they plan to recoup their investment.  Used to be $10M in Canadian money was only about $345 US, but now not so much.

One change, and it fails. The place is perfect. "Honey, I love you, you're perfect" should be the mantra. The meat sandwhich on rye is still one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. My wife and I split a whole sandwich...we could've split a half. But it's not just the size, it's the flavor. The long line was worth the wait. We took our sandwiches to the top of Mont Royal, and it was complete satisfaction - great food, stunning view.

In the 1970's Ben's DeLuxe Deli gave them very worthy competition and then the owner passed and it started its slide downhill.

I absolutely, positively have to hit Schwartz's on my next visit to Montreal. There's so much good eating to be done in Montreal even by Roadfood standards that i've never ventured up St. Laurent to Schwartz's.
