Hey Guy, welcome to Roadfood.  That's a trip I'd like to make myself.  It would be helpful and would generate some suggestions if you told us your route and any places you might be stopping along the way.

When you get past the southern tip of Lake Michigan you can start to head up 94 and then on through Ann Arbor. Plenty of good rec's there. I have a couple on my blog as well.
      www.davwudsfoodcourt.blogspot.com (search for ann arbor)
As well there is Tony Packo's in Toldeo if you head in that direction. An absolute must for any M*A*S*H* fan. (also in my blog)

When are you taking this trip?  Just asking because WI has a car ferry that goes across Lake Michigan from Milwaukee and that would allow for some great Milwaukee area experiences before driving onto the boat, then on to Michigan and a drive through some other nicely-diner appointed small towns on the way to Motor City.
The ferry does not run during winter though.. .

So the route I will be taking to Detroit will be, for the most part, a straight shot. I'll be taking this trip in mid March and be taking these freeways/highways...
          I-90E and I-94E through Montana
          Through Minnesota
          I-94E and I-90E to Milwaukee
          I-94E through Chicago to Detroit.
So for the majority im taking the main interstates to Detroit. Any suggestions for famous/delicious places to eat on the way? Thanks.

I'll also be visiting Ann Arbor and Milwaukee for a day because of family. I'm not sure whether ill be taking the ferry though.

In Milwaukee, you must stop at Kopps for frozen custard.Awesome! They also have excellent, huge burgers.I could reccomend a zillion places, but it would help if I knew what kind of food you like. Or what side of town you are visiting family. Either way, Kopps is a must!

We love  eating in Bozeman and Livingston. The Cat Eye Cafe in Bozeman is great for breakfast. The Stockman, The Sport Bar, The Livingston Bar, and the Second Street Bistro, all in Livingston are terrific.
