Should we call any of the other places ahead of time?  For example, I'd like to be sure to get brats at Schwai's and brat buns at City Bakery.

A stop or two in Milwaukee--maybe a Burger at Nite Owl or Sobelman's, then up the coast with no particular schedule in mind.  Suggestions?

A guy I know from LTHForum recommended running up to Susie Q Fish Company in Two Rivers for Smoked Fish, so depending on how early we get going, we might head up there.

We end up in Port Washington, but I don't care how late we get there, or how far we travel away from our hotel beforehand.

Bobbi & I went to Espana Tapas House last week using a Groupon and had a great meal. We noticed that tapas are 1/2 price during happy hour and thought it would make a great stop for the Contingent some day. So how about this Friday from 4 to 6?

Schwarz Fish Market is included as is Meisfeld's .

On to Port. Should we just play it by ear there? There is a Duluth Trading Company in Port Washington, a very nice pier, and of course Bernie's Meat Market. I worry only about getting to Dobie's at 5 sharp. I'm calling tomorrow for a rez. I'm like Burger King in that special orders don't upset me. We can also visit Ewing Brothers Fish Market in Port should you want.
Then on to Dobie's.

Buddy, I highly recommend Newport Shores in Port Friday night for cocktails, food, and the view. It is maybe 4, 5 blocks north of your hotel (you are staying at the Harbor something, right?), make a right on Jackson Street and head towards the lake one block and you've arrived. Also there is bar on the main drag called Alley Katz (maybe 3 blocks north). It is run by a husband and wife that sometimes travel with us to Treasure Beach Jamaica. Rich and Pam are the owners and if you stop in, mention us and Chuck, and ask to taste his home made sauces for his burgers and chicken sandwiches.

MFL, Google Maps is contradicting itself.  Playbird Road is northwest of the city (enter the address straight into G Maps) and the Old Wisconsin location close to Gosse's is at 2017 S. 17th St., so I don't know what's up with the location shown at 24th and Union.

Re:Sheboygan aka Sheeptown in Spring 2014/04/30 09:39:53
I'm afraid I might have caused a little confusion. I had to pick a location to start my map. I picked Bayshore Center which is a large shopping mall just north of Milwaukee proper. No one is going there; it's just a map location start. Now that Buddy is already deep in the Cheese Curtain territory, what time should we all meet at Schwai's? I had suggested 11:30 only  to allow the Roadhouse's time to wipe the sand from their eyes. I think our remaining Chicago sister and brothers should pick an earlier time if desired. Greg, Lucy, Pete, Mark, and Nina, 10:30? 11?, 11:30?

Both the Old Wisconsin Factory and The Outlet store are on the same road as Gosse's (Union St.) but not next together. The Playbird Road address, which is their industrial address, is not where we are going. One is a few blocks east of Gosse's (the outlet), the other a few blocks west (the main headquarters). The factory outlet store is located at:
2107 South 17th Street (at Union) Sheboygan, WI 53081 The hours are Monday - Friday 9:00am - 4:30pm and Saturdays from 9:00am - 1:00pm. (all the more reason for a slightly earlier 11 am start time at Schwai's).  I would urge all to call City Bakery and reserve your hard rolls before Saturday. They WILL sell out. They are worth buying and if you want to preserve that crust make sure you specify "bag in paper bag please". You may then put them in plastic, just not plastic first. The phone is 920-457-4493. They have outstanding bakery and unique to the are products you may want but those rolls go fast and they are baked on a stone hearth
.

SC, if you can eat anything before Midway and Gosse's, you have a much larger appetite than anyone I know! WWBBE? I say go for it; more power to you but please take photographs. Keep in mind that Gosse's is a dessert stop  too. Cheeseburgers, pork chop sandwiches, restaurant steaks and double brats (don't even consider a single or we'll ALL be branded as hopeless out of towners) are all sharable as well as the many types of tortes.

From Bernie's Meat Market, we go south a block to westbound WI Hwy 33 aka Grand Avenue. We go maybe 5 blocks to a traffic light controlled intersection. That is WI Hwy 32. You go left (south) maybe a mile and pick up southbound I-43. South 25 miles to exit 314B Howard Ave. East 2.4 miles to KK. South on KK 4 blocks and Dobie's is on your left. https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Bernie's+Fine+Meats,+119+N+Franklin+St,+Port+Washington,+WI+53074/Dobie's+Restaurant+%26+Lounge,+4136+S+Kinnickinnic+Ave,+St+Francis,+WI+53235/@43.2591015,-87.8979406,9z/am=t/data=!3m1!4b1!4m13!4m12!1m5!1m1!1s0x8804ea1dde0530c1:0x4a17ac75660ffa5d!2m2!1d-87.869435!2d43.388119!1m5!1m1!1s0x880517c85d4785c5:0x74f1e783d3d1b3db!2m2!1d-87.872503!2d42.969318

A visit to Port yesterday had me stopping at Newport Shores. They use Bernie's bacon on some sandwiches. I thought it tasted like Nueske's. No, really. I'm pumped and the weather for Saturday is calling for a few degrees warming than previously predicted.  Still, it won't be short weather.
Expect traffic delays in Milwaukee. It was brutal at 3:45 pm and it will be much worse at 4:30 pm. East 2.4 miles to KK. South on KK 4 blocks and Dobie's is on your left. Dobie's opens at 4 and they have a small maybe 10 seat bar. I hate them, but the traditional cocktail at a supper club in Wisconsin is a Brandy Old Fashioned Sweet (common) or Sour (rare). Brandy, a sugar cube splashed with bitters, muddled, ice, and topped with 7-Up , garnished with orange slices and a cherry. As they say here, Dobie's pours a stiff drink and they also have all the classic ice cream drinks at a price I don't believe (cheap). https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Bernie's+Fine+Meats,+119+N+Franklin+St,+Port+Washington,+WI+53074/Dobie's+Restaurant+%26+Lounge,+4136+S+Kinnickinnic+Ave,+St+Francis,+WI+53235/@43.2591015,-87.8979406,9z/am=t/data=!3m1!4b1!4m13!4m12!1m5!1m1!1s0x8804ea1dde0530c1:0x4a17ac75660ffa5d!2m2!1d-87.869435!2d43.388119!1m5!1m1!1s0x880517c85d4785c5:0x74f1e783d3d1b3db!2m2!1d-87.872503!2d42.969318

Alley Katz is strictly a frozen patty on a flat top. I mentioned only since you are staying within easy walking distance should you want a cocktail and perhaps, perhaps live music. As a sauce man, I thought you'd enjoy sampling Rich's self made sauces. My walleye sandwich at Newport Shores was fantastic but I wish I had ordered something with that wonderful Bernie's bacon in it. I almost forgot, we shared a decadent schaum torte.
I've never tried Espana but the menu looks wonderful. My Friday ex-coworker dinner will be at El Fuego, a huge Mexican restaurant that has a large menu but only one item I find compelling. That is oysters on the half shell topped with shrimp, pico de gallo, and avocado slices. I plan on at least a dozen for my dinner.

What to do in Port Washington? From The Holiday Inn Harborview hotel where Grand Ave. bends into Franklin St. north for 4 blocks there are much to see and do. Besides Bernie's 119 N. Franklin and Alley Katz 219 N. Franklin there is Duluth Trading Company, 100 N. Franklin, Java Dock Café 116 W. Grand Ave., Baltica tea Room (Eastern European tea shop)  223 N. Franklin, 1860 Lighthouse Museum 311 Johnson St. (may be closed this Saturday though), Blue Heron Artisan Gallery 102 E. Pier St. , Schooners Bar, Gallery 224 224 E. Main St., Port Historical Society 205 N. Franklin, Sir James Pub, Harbor Temptations 215 N. Franklin, Hidden Treasure Resale Shop 139 W. Grand Ave., Portica Gift Shop 210 N. Another idea is to just go to Kopp's. Their food is OK and Dr. Dawg, CSD's students place is just across the street. I might be hamburger'd out but not hot dog/Italian Beef'd out. They also have tamales.  We could eat in Port at Newport Shores if they have room. They have real broasted chicken and Prime Rib besides seafood.

To those that don't FB (yes, it is a verb sometimes), we have a few places in mind. None will need a reservation and Chuck said we should just wing it. I think we could just overeat at Gosse's. Jim, Bobbi, was it 12 different types of tortes? Chicago folks, we have a good sized Vietnamese place near the airport that has a banh mi unlike anything in the Windy City. Think bulgogi pork as the meat choice. Lucy mentioned Jalapeno Loco. I think winging it is the best idea. Do all of our dinner people have a GPS? I think all of our choices involve exiting I-43 at Layton Avenue.

cjcoder, I called City Bakery and reserved a dozen rolls and a loaf of hard roll bread (makes wonderful toast) for myself. They only make a limited supply of their brat meat filled rolls so that might be a problem but they have enough unusual bakery items plus their sweet rolls, pies and cakes we should leave happy. Since Saturday is a heavy shopping day and all 3 meat markets have special brat flavors besides their regular ones I think you're safe. Still,   it wouldn't hurt to call ahead. I'm pretty sure Bernie's would be unable to sell our group 16 pounds of bacon. I might have to settle for fresh or smoked Slovenian or Hungarian sausage or a stick of their Cajun summer sausage. Meisfelds has enough of everything for all of us and Schwai's might have enough frozen products to supplement his fresh.

It's a smaller place and they couldn't seat all of us until 8 pm. It's one of those charming little places that are rapidly disappearing. In fact I can only think of one place in Milwaukee that starts you out with a gratis lazy susan. When you and Frank come up this summer, we'll plan on going there.

Do you have any of the Contingent's cell numbers? If your plan changes,  maybe you can join us somewhere earlier. On Saturday the drive north from Milwaukee to Sheboygan or Port is a breeze. You  cannot find sandwiches in Port or even Milwaukee like those in Sheboygan but Port is a real nice town to visit.

Re:The start time; I'm perfectly happy starting earlier, although it's probably too late to communicate that to everyone at this point.  Also, this ain't my tour, I'm just along for the ride.  Sorry I didn't see this until almost midnight, but we've been on the road all day.

Also, a tip for everyone heading up to Sheboygan, there's some serious construction just north of White Fish Bay, reducing the interstate to one lane heading north.  It runs for a few miles, adding at least 15 minutes to the trip.

Looking forward to seeing everyone Saturday morning (at whatever time) at Schwai's

I'm glad I checked this page-- J and I were just getting ready to head over to Dobie's. Too bad we didn't get to see any of you, but maybe the next time.

There were doubters, but we managed to hit almost every one of the stops on the original list.  Those we missed were replaced by other, suitable substitutes.  Once we come out of our food comas the pictures and words should begin to arrive.

Very briefly, I'll just say it was a spectacular spring day in the upper Midwest.  We sampled some of the best old time Burgers and Brats to be had in the Sheboygan metro area.  Mixed in between the actual eating stops were a fine selection of shopping opportunities where we picked up a cooler full of southeast Wisconsin specialties to bring home for later use.

We wrapped up the day with some "lighter fare' in the form of a Vietnamese feast in Milwaukee.

More details from me and others once we've recovered.

P.S. I know this might be blasphemy, but the Friday night dinner we had at Dobie's (specifically the main courses, rather than the sides)  may have been better than what we enjoyed last month at the Pine Club in Dayton.  Spectacular Steaks done to picture perfect medium rare, and an abundant plate of beautifully sauteed Sea Scallops made Mrs. Roadhouse and I very happy.  I'm pretty certain the JRPfeff/Pie Diva chapter were equally satisfied.

Buddy,
It's not blasphemy that the steaks were better than at the Pine Club.  Ohio is on the "border" of the Midwest..........the farther central and west you go, the better the meat is.  My favorite so far is Archie's Waeside in LeMars, Iowa.
Glad you all had a good time.  Looking forward to pictures!

I can still taste that 12 year bourbon at New Port Shores as the tour was winding down. I'm happy we had such great weather. My high point was the great company I shared; Beth, Bobbi, Brad, Christin, Chuck, Eric, Greg, Jeff, Jim, Lucy, Mark, Martin, Nina, Pam, Pete, Susan, and especially the staff at Gosse's. Those that ducked out the door early missed the host's gift of a pocket/keychain flashlight. I, of course, realized 20 miles from home that I had forgotten my camera. If I turned around, Buddy would beat me to our first location, which never should happen, so thanks to those whose pictures I "borrowed". It's 8:58 am Sunday and I'm hungry. Good thing I got a banh mi to go and some leftover poppyseed torte!

What he said.  It was a great day and every stop had something to offer.  At 5:30 this morning Mrs. Chicken and I shared a piece of Cedar Valley string cheese and we're having grilled Schwai's summer sausage tonight.

CTD, you missed the keychains by mere minutes.  It was as if they were waiting for you to leave before handing them out.

My route home took me through Mayville and I drove past the Audubon Inn and its related restaurants NOLA North Grill and NOLA North Bar and Cafe.  Are you listening, X1?
