The last two times I had Thumanns franks, bratwurst, and/or kielbasa I had 'em on Portugese rolls we got at the ShopRite store bakery, and I was astounded by how good they were: a very good companion, especially for the brat. Just thought you fellow New Jersey folks would like to know. -Hugh

Which Shop Rite? They each have their own bakeries and quality can vary.

These came from the one in Union, on 2661 Morris Avenue at the corner of Liberty. It also happens to be kitty-corner from Union Pork Store, so that's a bonus; get your brat and your rolls in one stop. -Hugh

I don't think Shoprite makes thier own Porteguese rolls. I assume they are deleivered daily, but by late in the day they've been sitting around all day. For what it's worth, lately I've been getting my rolls (of all types) from Times Farm on South Avenue in Plainfield. Texiera Bakery supplies them, and there's all sorts of varieties, and very reasonable prices. Turnover is frequent, so even later in the day everything is still fresh. Plus the rolls are in those plastic self-serve display cases, so they stay fresher. --Ken

I have two Shop Rites that are really nearby (although they're scattered all over this area). The one in Marlton is owned by Ravitz and the one in Berlin is owned by Zallie. I think that the one in Marlton has a busier and better bakery than the one in Berlin. However, I noticed that the one in Berlin, since remodelling, has placed their bakery in a more prominent location. I also think that the Portuguese rolls are delivered, but I will have to pay closer attention my next time there. If I'm not mistaken, I think that BJ's (it's like Sam's) has those rolls, too (I'm sure they're not freshly baked, though). The Berlin Shop Rite had Thumann's hot dogs once and then stopped carrying them. BJ's has Thumann's everything (including they'll-slice-it-for-you Thumann's lunchmeat). The roast beef is absolutely luscious from there.
