ShopRite in Northern NJ

I just reminded myself that I wanted to mention when I was recently up in Bergen County how much I enjoyed my visit to one of my favorite supermarkets..ShopRite. The one I was at in Rochelle Park has a Chinese food area where they prepare all sorts of commonplace menu items like fried rice, chicken with broccoli, etc. They ahve the woks and there is actually a Chinese cook! They had won ton soup, egg drop soup, hot and sour soup. It was really pretty decent. They weight all the food except for the soup and egg roll. I don't recall the price per ounce....It was very reasonable. In the deli department they had something that I loved. A boneless pork roast, cold, thay they slice to order. It was wonderful. Just the right ratio of exterior fat to the center cut loin of pork. Store roasted..Lots of black pepper on the surface...It was wonderful. Get a nice Italian roll, a good tomato, some mayo and you got yourself a fantastic sandwich. The variety at ShopRite was just wonderful; something we simply do not have here with our Publix, which is a great supermarket chain. Taking noting from them. I wish Publix would consider some more ideas for their stores Chinese food being one of them. I may write them...

Now the Rochelle Park Shop Rite is one I remember going to a lot a decade ago. It was not quite that fancy back then. I would just like to add a note that unlike a lot of supermarket chains, most of the ShopRite stores are franschises, though Wakefern does own a few directly. While the selection of goods sold in sealed packages is pretty much the same from store to store, many of the franchisees offer unique departments. Examples are a service Kosher butcher and bakery dept., the Chinese food mentioned by Baah Ben, really high quality bakery departments with many items like donuts still baked from scratch, cafes, pizza, florist shop, prepared foods, expanded ethnic and international food selection, etc. I don't think there is a central list of which Shop Rite stores have specialty departments.

I love ShopRite! I have three in the immediate area, so it's easy for me to stop wherever I am or whatever my plans are. One used to be a Giant, and two are original, owned by different families. There is also one on the other side of Cherry Hill, NJ that has The Kosher Experience. They need that more on this side of Cherry Hill, and we also have the Chinese buffet thing that always has fresh food being laid out. It just doesn't sit for long at all. The salad bar at one of them, closer to my work in Marlton, is just great. It's so clean. We also have a little restaurant at the one in Berlin. They make their own pizza there and it's so reasonable and good. For me, it beats Wegman's hands down because I don't have to be nauseated by the Nouveau Riche and I don't pay an arm and a leg for things. Oh, and one last thing: ShopRite brand of almost anything has been a lifesaver to me on many an occasion when I had nearly zero money to spend. We went to the ShopRite in Hamilton Township, Mercer County (I say that because there are a few Hamilton Townships here) once and put together a fantastic salad picnic. Brian made a beeline for the area where they only have peppers (stuffed and unstuffed), fresh mozzarella, asparagus, things like that, and he put something together that looked like this (excuse the cameraphone picture):

We've had a Shop-Rite here in New Paltz for years. They were without competition until a Stop-n-Shop opened a huge new store across the street. We had all learned to think of Shop Rite as the store you love to hate - it was pretty run down and shabby. But when StopnShop opened Shop Rite wised up, cleaned up, and are now healthy competitors against StopnShop. Cheers, John

I've noticed that Shoprites seem to either be older run down ones or somewhat new with all the speciality depts. I've noticed that for the most part the specialty depts are pretty consistant from store to store (cheese dept, chinese food bar, carribbean hardwood grill, salad bar, mediterranean/olive bar, etc) I have noticed that the larger kosher sections are in stores near large Jewish populations i.e. Lakewood. I like Shoprite for their prices and selection but I would rather shop at Wegman's even though it's much further from me. I always end up spending so much more money at Wegman's because certain things there are much more expensive like their meats and I get creative while shopping which isn't always a bad thing. Dave

there is a Shop Rite in West Caldwell, on Passaic Avenue. they do a very good job with their hot foods. the closest store to me is the Parsippany store, on route 46. to be fair, I don't shop there regularly, but the store seems to lack the culinary arts that the other store displays. but I sincerely applaud the Shop Rites for their diverse offerings at a very fair valued price.

Hello all , You can always find me in the Vails Gate or Monroe NY Shop Rite for our meats and cold cuts , and any other specials I might come across . For the rest of the shopping I visit another major retailer in Monroe that shop rite cannot beat in most prices . Benzee
