Is this place worth a slight detour to visit? I didn't know about it until I looked at the NC BBQ Society BBQ trail....

I think the Short Sugar's in Reidsville is worth a slight detour. However, the Short Sugar's in Danville, VA is only OK if fate intervenes and you accidentally ride past it.

I agree with Purple Haze. The Danville location seems to be popular, but I didn't think the food was anything special.

SS is not really worth a detour anymore. Once upon a time it was quite good. Not so much now. The last couple of times I went, the barbecue was substandard. It's oven cooked and "finished" on the pit, much like King's in Petersburg, VA.

If it were far western North Carolina, I'd drive several miles out of my way. They have an interesting sauce with a hint of ginger, and I think they do an excellent job w/ white slaw. They do an OK job with the meat, but I agree with others in that it isn't the same as a true woodburner.

However, given where they are situated in central NC, chances are you'll find just as good or better BBQ without going out of your way.

              Jim in NC,
You just saved me a trip. King's in Peterburg, VA was one of my anticipated stops on my BBQ tour when it warms up a little. That's a @#$% shame.

King's is worth a visit if you're craving onion rings. Come to think of it, I once had a terrific breakfast there.
