Shorty's Lunch - Washington, PA

Upon recommendation of a friend I got off Interstate 70 as I was passing through Washington, PA today and visited Shorty's Lunch at 34 West Chestnut Street.

What a great place!  It opened in 1935 and the booths were added in 1950.  Not too much has changed.  Well, the change from Coke to Pepsi last summer caused some controversy, but let's get to the food.

The hot dogs are specially made for Shorty's by Albert's Meats of Taylorstown.  You can find a variety of Albert's hot dogs in local stores but not the same as you get at Shorty's.  The signature hot dog comes with chili, mustard and onions.  I had one with just chili and one with chili and ketchup.  Next time I'll try a plain one and the chili/mustard/onions dog.  The fries were delicious.

The hot dogs are grilled right in the window and the furnishings from another era make this place a must visit for any hot dog lover.  It's easy to find from exit 20 of Interstate 70 (Beau Street).  Take Beau towards Washington and Jefferson College.  Pass the college and the county court house and turn right onto Franklin.  One block to W. Chestnut.  Shorty's is on the right in the middle of the block.

I have only been to Shorty's once and that was several years ago.  Don't remember much about the hot dogs, other than I liked them.  But the atmosphere is pure Roadfood.  My gf doesn't live too far from there, so I will stop in and take some photos.  Are they open on Saturdays?

Shorty's is open on Saturdays.  There is also a Shorty's fan Club on Facebook with nearly 1,500 members.  There are photos and videos at the Facebook Shorty's Fan Club.

    chili & ketchup????

Sounds mighty good to me!  I don't think mustard and chili go together myself... I like EITHER mustard or chili (and since most chili has a tomato base, I don't think its too far off the mark to add ketchup)
