it's not a franchise, nor has it ever been a franchise. It has always been corporate owned.
Sorry, but that is wrong...not that it really matters.

Who We Are and What We Do:
General:
Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. (‘‘Chipotle’’ or the ‘‘Company’’) develops and operates fast casual, fresh Mexican food restaurants in 21 states throughout the United States and in the District of Columbia. As of December 31, 2005, we operated 481 restaurants and had eight restaurants operated by franchisees. They never had many franchises, and I believe they have now all been bought back up.
Its amazing what will tie some peoples underwear up in a knot. Normally I steer clear of stuff like this but, if I read everything correctly, I believe an apology should be heading out to annpeeples.
A side note: Who was the last person to argue the definition of the word "IS".
Joe
sorry, I don't anyone an apology. I said it's not a franchise. Ann said it IS. And, she's wrong, it's not. And, at this point, it can't be, because they are not offering any. Who knows what the future holds, but as you'll see a little further down, it doesn't seem likely they'll franchise.
so, yes, at one point less than 2% of the company was franchised. I made the comment that it wasn't a franchise, Ann pulled an "au contraire" that it was a franchise. And in fact it isn't a frachise, nor are they entertaining franchise offerings. I may have been overzealous that they "never" had franchises, but really, my point was that it's not a franchise and I was wrongly contradicted.
By the way, the 8 franchises were owned by three people under an agreement with McDonald's. When McDonalds cashed out, essentially those restaurants had 24 months to close their franchise.
It was never Chipotle's intention to franchise as evident by their own statements in the same annuyal report which states that,
"Our franchisees could take actions that harm our reputation and reduce our royalty revenues.
We do not exercise control over the day-to-day operations of our franchised stores. While we try to ensure that franchised stores meet the same operating standards that we demand of company-operated
stores, one or more franchised stores may not do so. Any operational shortcomings of our franchised stores are likely to be attributed to our system-wide operations and could adversely affect our reputation and have a direct negative impact on the royalty revenues we receive from those stores."
In any event, Joe, I started off by saying it's not a franchise and, indeed, it's not. Still not sure why Ann would contradict me without first looking into it, but it really doesn't matter, because Tony wants to call my err out, so apparently that let's Ann off the hook for contradicting me when she was wrong.
But, I don't care, because it hasn't changed my opinion that Subway is one of the best, in terms of quality, franchises out there, but Chipotle is my favorite fast food.
and, for the record Joe, the only reason I got "my underpants in a knot," was because I was wrongly contradicted. It would have been one thing if I said some was my favorite and someone else said it sucked. I wouldn't care, because that's opinion. But this was different. I should've been less zealous with my response so as not to make a gaff which took away some of my credibility, but nevertheless, I originally simply said it's not a franchise, and it is not. Truthfully, it should have ended there.
I'm not sure how others react to "au contraire, my friend," but to me, that's pretty condescending language - and it's made more irritating, when the condescending person, is flat wrong.
