Skip the $5 foot long...... Tue, 05/13/08 3:10 PM (permalink)
Subway, and now their competition is pushing the special priced $5 footlong. It is still not a deal. If you are in Worcester or Westboro Mass, Regatta deli gives you more for less. The Regatta is not a foot long but it is wider and has more meat. www.regatta-deli.com . I was there last Friday.....I thought that I'd beat the crowd by getting there at 11:30.....no such luck,,,,,,,it still took me 15 or 20 minutes. After a while I tried to count sandwiches going out the door. I lost count at over 100. The rumor is, according to the lady in line behind me, they do several THOUSAND sandwiches on a Friday. The math didn't work for me (400 per hr x 2 hrs for the lunch rush is only 800, and they are not open during supper hours), but I smiled and shut up. I smiled even more as I ate my sandwich......lol. BTW, the website lists the Regatta Club at $4. They recently raised it to $4.50. It is still a bargain.

The Regatta clubs are premade, and every few minutes the cash register lady says,"Anyone for Regattas only?". Regatta only customers move to the front of the line and get right out the door. Specials take some time to make, but they are worth the wait.

I think the gas to get me to Mass will still make subway a better deal.

That may be fine where you live, so good for you that you've got an alternative. However, if you live in a town that only has a Subway, no Quizno's, no Blimpie, and no other place that has subs, it's still a pretty good deal.

Thanks for the heads up, tmiles. I stopped in there today and had a ham and turkey grinder (the only grinder I ever order). It was pretty good although I didn't care for their ham all that much.

Talk about wicked attitude-heavy wait staff though. The workers behind the counter were so rude that it almost makes me never want to go back again.

I agree, that they are serious to the point of rudeness during the lunch rush. During slower parts of the day, they are very friendly. I have noticed though, during the rush, even after they have not given you so much as a smile, the cashier always says "Thankyou"

A young girl I watched grow up in my neighborhood now works at Subway. It's a Subway inside a Wall Mart. She calls me PapaJoe.

My grandaughter works at the Wall Mart so I stop by often. She is a special occasion cake cook and decorator.

Here is my trick... I order my footlong all the way and it's a bargin! All the way = every pepper, pickle, and vegie they have piled on there. It ends up about 6 inches tall, mmmm.

Our little town was recently blessed with a Quiznos. Gail and I went there last week, had a turkey sub. We have had and still have at least four local Mom and Pops that make a much better sub, and I think they'll all still be here when Quiznos is long gone and forgotten.

                Cheers, John

Quiznos is the worst of the chain sub shops by far. The meat is very poor. I'd take Subway over Quiznos any day. I'd take some of my favorite independent sub shops over Subway any day as well, but this is a Subway thread.
Some Jersey Mike's I went to years ago were great, but I've heard it's not as good as it once was. As of now, Subway might actually be my favorite FFF chain, (this doesn't include Chipotle, because Chipotle's is not a franchise - Chipotle is my favorite FF chain, as of now anyway).

tmiles, did you try the Regatta Club? People seem to rave about that sandwich.... I think I might go back tomorrow and give it a try for myself. Plus, ordering a 'Regatta' will probably be much less stressful than ordering a special

GNeedles, so you do that also. My worry is that Subway might ban us.

Score, I am w/ you on Quiznos. I just thought the ones in my area were bad.

There are no mom n pop sub places east of Dallas where I am.

I will always choose a neighborhood sub shop over Subway.

Good luck finding one around here. (45 miles west of Chicago) All we have are Subways, Quiznos and Jimmy Johns, no indie sandwich shops.

I agree Papajoe....I order with "the works" ...lots of spinach and all the pickles, roasted hot peppers and all the regular peppers...olives..etc etc..and it's a feast...worth it when a family eats for little....and with all the veggies, fairly healthy...maybe not as good as my favorite sub shop...but it's hard to totally destroy a sub...cold cuts and toppings...and at $5...our sandwiches are loaded and remotely healthy...a good deal. Maybe their bread is inferior to a great Italian loaf....but at the price it's a small give back!

I am lucky enough to live in NJ, I have my pick of many awesome deli's. I only goto subway when the deli's are closed, they are open much later...

You have to order Subway sandwiches with the works - with all those veggies to fill you up because you can read a newspaper through the meat they put on them.

I really hate it when people contradict me when they clearly have no idea what they are talking about. Chipotle is corporate owned, there are no Chipotle franchises.

and your post makes no sense, first you say it "IS" a franchise, then you say it "CAN BE" a franchise. Well, Ann, it either is or isn't a franchise. It is fast food for certain, and it is certainly a chain, but it's not a franchise, nor has it ever been a franchise. It has always been corporate owned.

Right you are, Scorereader. It says so on their web site, at the end of the first paragraph here:

Who We Are and What We Do:

                                          General:

Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. (‘‘Chipotle’’ or the ‘‘Company’’) develops and operates fast casual, fresh Mexican food restaurants in 21 states throughout the United States and in the District of Columbia. As of December 31, 2005, we operated 481 restaurants and had eight restaurants operated by franchisees.

They never had many franchises, and I believe they have now all been bought back up.

Its amazing what will tie some peoples underwear up in a knot. Normally I steer clear of stuff like this but, if I read everything correctly, I believe an apology should be heading out to annpeeples.

A side note: Who was the last person to argue the definition of the word "IS".

What Ann ment I think by "can be" was that they might sell you one for the right price. If they won't you could do like Howard Hughes and just buy the whole company. Hey, like a girl once told me in Las Vegas... "I'm not cheep but I can be had".
