I have to admit I love 'em; out of the tin or on crackers, etc. But, what else are they good for? Any recipes out there? Smoked herring only... , etc. No lutefisk or surstromming, please... http://buy-surstromming.com

I want to be sure we are talking about the same thing. In the prepared fish and meat refrig. case at the market they have bottles of Herring in Wine sauce and Herring in Sour Cream. The Herring in Wine Sauce are usually pieces of herring filet with sliced onions and a bay leaf or two in a vinegar/wine liquid. Some times you can find "Steaks" of Herring in the same sauce (usually larger slices 3/4 inch or so thick on the steak). They make no statement anywhere as to being Smoked or not. I also see the sardine can type of Kippered Herring, definitely oily and stronger flavor. Which of these are you all referring too??? I love the Wine Sauce Herring, can eat the whole jar for a lunch as long as I don't have to breathe on anyone important to me after lunch. I can pass on the Kippered Herring under most conditions. I prefer Smoked Oysters from the can.

Kipper snacks!!! Totally cool. Out of the tin, on toasted rye bread, with thinly sliced dill pickles, thinly sliced onions, some capers. If in the mood, the whole thing doused with hot sauce. A complete comfort food. Herring fillets of some sort, of an English origin; who cares, they taste good.

I like the herring i get from the German store here. Tiny tins of almost translucent fish in wine sauce, different flavors. Not cheap. These are nothing like Vita pickled herring.

My dad would put a tin of kippers in a sauce pan of water and heat it up. This is safe if you don't let it boil dry. He then would have them with eggs and toast for breakfast. When he would open the tin of hot kippers he would clear the house. He did shame my brother and I into to trying them and we both liked them. They had kippers for breakfast on our Alaskan cruise but they were terrible. But then so was most of the food. Norwegian Cruise Lines if you are curious. Cakes

It's not herring, but the kippers that come in a flat tin in oil are great as a side with whatever kinds of eggs you like. I drain the kippers. Mince and fry a half onion in a good amount of butter. add the kippers and fry trying not to break the kippers too much. Needs maybe five minutes on medium, low heat. Great side dish with eggs.

My father got me "HOOKED" on kippers too !! We used to take them fishing. We'd get a couple of tins of kippers, a block of cracker barrel cheese and a couple of sleeves of Saltines and take them as our snack !! I still love them to this day ! I like them on melba toast with some spicey brown mustard on them !

I just love them straight out of the can, maybe a little hot sauce. Even better is the spiced herring in wine sauce with some sour dills, and a peice of onion on some Wheat Thins with some good red wine. Simply Heaven.

I love the kippered snacks. I usually open a can of the kippered snacks and a can of sardines in olive oil, and have them together with some sliced raw onions and plenty of pepper, salt and added olive oil.

Cakes and scbuzz,my Father also introduced me to the kippered snacks. When I was young, the times that Dad made himself breakfast, he would open a can of kippered snacks, heat them in a frying pan, and then scramble eggs in the oil. I never cared for eggs, but I always had some of the smoked kippers. It has been years since I have had them, or even thought about them. Adjudicator, thanks for the nice nostalgic memories. I think I'll look for these next time I'm in Wegmans... Another fond memory is sardines packed in oil or water, I forget which, on a plate with lemon juice, sliced tomato, and rye toast on the side.

M-M-M-M. Great for lunch. I usually do 2 small or one large can of kippers with toast. Too late today, but tomorrow will do. The small Norwegian sardines are also a great treat with toast.

I like the canned smoked herring on finnish rye flat bread called finn crisp, with a little bit of good ketchup. But I really love the jars of pickled herring with sour cream and onions, I can eat a jar of that in no time, usually by itself or sometimes with pumperknickel dark bread.

When I was a kid on an saturdays while running errands with my dad, we would stop at the local tavern where he would have a shot and a beer and I would get an 8oz. bottle of coke and either a Smokir (similar to a slim jim but better) or my favorite A Blind Robin, smoked Herring extremly smelly, salty and oh so tasty.
