Smoked Meat Hot Dogs Sat, 05/17/08 10:04 AM (permalink)

Has anyone ever had a smoked meat hot dog in Montreal?

There used to be a place near Griffintown bordering Old Montreal, that served these up as a kid. To be clear, this is NOT smoked meat in a hot dog bun! These were genuine foot-long hot dogs made out of 100% Montreal smoked meat. They had this incredibly distinct smokey/spicey taste and came in a large seeded bun with mustard on top. So delicious!

I spent an entire afternoon last summer driving around trying to find this greasy spoon lunch counter that I'd frequented as a kid, but not surprisingly, without any luck; I'm guessing it's long since closed up shop.

If I recall, it existed a few blocks from the Baron Sports outlet downtown. I remember because my dad used to take me there often to buy fishing lures which I always found incredibly boring and would otherwise protest, but he'd get me to consent with the promise of these jumbo smoked meat hot dogs, crispy brown french fries and a milkshake afterwards.

I've been Googling this all morning but have not found any info, except for a place in Lachine that may or may not be called Montreal Hot Dog or Smoked Meat Company or something to that effect. It's like a block or two up from Magnan's across the Lachine canal and appears to be a small bakery joint. At least when I passed by a few months ago to inquire about the smoked meat hot dogs, that's the impression I got. This is definitely NOT the same place that I had been to as a kid but I'm told that they supplied the dogs to all vendors int eh city. I'm not sure how factual this is. Unfortunately, the day that I stopped in I found out that they were only selling them as take-home from their butcher as they apparently only prepare these on Thursdays to sell. Not wanting to part with a bunch of uncooked dogs, as the order of the day was lunch, I decided to come back and try again. Hasn't happened yet though, perhaps this week...

I really wish I remembered more details about the original place I'd been to; those smoked meat dogs were killer and I still dream about 'em!

If anyone has any clue what I'm talking about or knows more about these, please post and lemme know!!!

I think I'll swing by Decarie Hot Dog this afternoon as I really worked myself into the mood for a hot dog and fries... tomorrow I'll be driving down to Plattsburgh and sampling the michigans at Clare and Carla's ramshackle roadside hideaway. Can't wait!!

My hubby and I took our smoker to the races but forgot the ribs!!!! But I did have some Sabrett's so we put those on the smoker and they were AMAZING!!!! Although it's a lot of work to go thru for a hot dog.

HEB, a Texas grocery, sells a mesquite smoked hot dog. I have not tried one but want to. I bet someone makes a hickory smoked dog. That sounds good too.

Damdy and Dj, those smoked dogs sound great!

Porker, Applewood smoked sounds good also.

I have no problem finding smoked hotdogs but I wonder from the OP saying " These were genuine foot-long hot dogs made out of 100% Montreal smoked meat" if the meat is smoked and then made into a hotdog?

It only showed up at the very end, right before you confirm your order.

Joe, one of the finest dogs here in Michigan is made by Koegels. They claim to be hardwood smoked, but all I ever smell is hickory when cooking them in water on the stove... The whole kitchen smells like a hickory smoker when cooking these puppies!

Thanks Vic! Hey, hickory is hardwood. I have always heard that Koegel's is one of the best dogs around. I didn't know they were hardwood smoked.

I believe that's the way it was done. This was well over fifteen years ago so I don't remember exactly. But it sure tasted like the brisket was smoked and marinated in spices the old fashioned way, and than made into a hot dog. my mouth is watering just thinking about them...

We tried the Nueske's today. I cooked them according to the package directions which said to put 1 tablespoon of butter or margarine and a quarter cup of water in a skillet and heat for 8-10 minutes. This proved to be a good way to cook as it maintains the "snappiness" of the natural casing. We found these dog to be quite tasty though a bit salty. I believe I could detect the smokyness though it was mild. I would probably buy these franks if they were for sale (or on sale I should say) in my local stores. They were offering a free shipping promotion on these but even with that they were about $9 per package which are 10/1. I don't know if people in Wisconsin pay this kind of money for this brand but I couldn't. I do give them a thumbs up for taste.
