So this coyote walks into a Quiznos

CHICAGO — For one day, at least, the roadrunner was safe. It seems the coyote was hankering for another kind of fast food. Employees and customers at a downtown Chicago Quiznos sandwich shop were stunned to see a coyote walk through the propped-open front door Tuesday afternoon and lie down in a cooler stocked with fruit juice and soda. "It wasn't aggressive at all," restaurant manager Bina Patel told the Chicago Tribune. "It was just looking around." Employees and customers calmly cleared out of the restaurant, though some took the time to finish their sandwiches and snap some cell-phone photos, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. Animal control officers took the passive coyote away after about 40 minutes, after a curious crowd had gathered outside. "This one definitely I will definitely remember forever. A coyote in downtown Chicago," Quiznos employee Rick Torres told WLS-TV. The city captures 10 to 15 coyotes every year, especially in the spring when they are most active, said Anne Kent, director of Chicago Animal Care and Control. Veterinarians will examine the coyote and, if he is not injured, release him into the wild.

I saw a piece about this on television. He may have bad taste in food, but he seemed very polite. I don't think they needed to collar and muzzle him and drag him to the paddy wagon. I'm sure a Quizno's sub would have sent him packing.

Wouldn't feeding him one of those crappy Quizno's sandwiches constitute cruelty to animals?

I found this line in the story just a tad odd: "Animal control officers took the passive coyote away after about 40 minutes, after a curious crowd had gathered outside." Passive? That coyote was fighting all the way as it was being dragged from the shop to the van.

In the video I saw he seemed passive until they collared and muzzled him. I think he was just looking for directions to Vienna Beef.

I just wish I could find a few passive ones around here. All the ones I ever see are about as passive as my one-time mother-in-law.

I seldom see my local coyotes, but often hear them. So far this year, they have made a Roadfood meal of 2 of my lambs. They are smart, bad, animals. There should be a year around season, and a bounty on them. I wonder where the animal control guys let that coyote go??? I expect, out in the "country", near some poor saps chicken flock. It would be better to let it go in a local neigbhorhood so it could help with problem cats

Here in Ohio there is no closed season on coyotes. They've been killing sheep and chickens here for years -- causing really big losses.

Obviously a sign that the animal has lost its fear of people. I am worried about this in the coyote.

I think the coyote never got the word that Quiznos no longer has them fuzzy little rodent-things from their ads a few years back. Not much other coyote food in downtown Chicago.

the more meat in a Quiznos the better. the way they they cook it you couldn't tell coyote from prime rib. they'd probably charge more for coyote because it's fresh meat.

I heard that nobody minded the coyote being there until he started endangering public safety... he lit up a cigarette.

Lighting up a cigarette and ordering foie gras??? That's one BALLSY coyote! We have lots of them here in the desert.........they like to lurk and watch the quail. Obviously the quail are smarter and faster. We had a moose walk into a medical clinic in Anchorage early in the morning last summer......took a look around.....nobody here (they were hiding in another room). Bad service. The moose exited.

I think we are seeing more wild animals in places where they don't belong because we we keep encroaching more and more on their natural habitats. When developers clear forests to build big shopping centers and crowded neighborhoods, the animals have no choice but to move on. The problem is, there are fewer and fewer places for them to move to.

The Phoenix AZ area is the poster child for this

They show up in my back yard 3-4 times a week, usually chasing rabbits. They seem quite unafraid of humans, our dogs go absolutely nuts when they spot one. On our morning runs the dogs have had a few close encounters with them, although the javalina tend to be more agressive than the coyotes.

We see coyotes in the neighborhood now and then. This Spring there have been more sightings than the last couple of years. I believe that is the result of the continued building of homes in the area, and loss of woodlands to that building program. We are much more careful with our 'doggie-door' and access to the deck than we have been in the past. Our neighbors have had coyotes eating the bowls of catfood they leave on their porch for the cats...and a cat or two has turned up missing lately. Coyotes 'yelps' are quite noticeable and our dogs want to 'watch' from the deck, but have no desire to go chasing around AT NIGHT when the coyotes are wandering the area. During the day is a different story. The Scotties are quite brave in daylight (and not too smart about wild critters).

Oh, Al, please watch the Scotties during the day too. The coyotes around here are so inured to people anymore that they are attacking dogs and small children in broad daylight.

We keep an eye on them during their outings in daylight. Thank you for your concern!

My parents have lived in the same subdivision for 39 years; when they first moved there it was out in the middle of nowhere but the area's really filled in since then (just east of CherryVale Mall and south of Magic Waters, for those of you familiar with the Rockford IL area). This past winter my dad found in the yard what he thought were the pawprints of a large dog but later a neighbor told him that he'd observed a couple of coyotes in the pre-dawn morning. And today (4/10) CNN's homepage has a video news report of a small child that was attacked in New Jersey. We live in rural Wisconsin and occasionally hear coyotes, but there's currently minimal development pressure in our area and I haven't heard of any problems. Brad

Could I interest you in a few head of registered Texas Longhorn cattle? Particularly a momma cow with a new born calf at her side. Bye bye Coyotes!
