Soda for breakfast

http://www.redorbit.com/news/health/801876/pop_fans_pour_it_on_in_the_morning/index.html

I don't know about anyone else, but this article affirms my morning habit. For over 20 years, I drink about 6 sodas a day, before noon. I know most people still prefer coffee or tea in the morning, but that has never done it for me. I'm ususally the only one at the table ordering a soda for breakfast in the morning. Does anyone else share this habit?

WOW!!! Six sodas in the morning would probably kill me. I have hard enough of a time drinking one soda anytime during the day. If I am home I have juice, but if I have breakfast out, I like iced tea, which I admit is equally as odd.

There is nothing odd about tea in the morning that happens to have ice. Very common in the south. I love it.

Guilty, but not 6! I stop every morning and get a 44 ozer and that last until about 9:30a, I MAY have one more in the afternoon but I usually try to stick to water. A couple of beers after work then I either have soda or tea with dinner. Always soda with breakfast which is is usally what I had for dinner the night before. If it's breakfast out eggs, hashbrowns, etc. soda.

My mother drinks Pepsi in the morning. My sister does too. I've always been a milk and orange juice kind of guy.

I've severely reduced the amount of soda I drink. I've banned it from my fridge to reduce temptation. I drink a cup of coffee in the morning and I have one soda at lunch, that's it. If I eat at a restaurant, I may order one but I've stopped drink soda after soda.

It's been a strange adjustment. I feel kind of spacey in the mornings sometimes but I really am trying to lose weight, be more healthy. We'll see the reduced soda policy helps.

I only drink the diet kind, occasionally I'll have a regular soda, but when I have diet soda it is always caffenated.

My name is Al and I am a soda-holic. Seriously, I drink a lot more soda than I should, and know it. When I was teaching full time it was common for me to consume a six-pack a day during work hours. Now I don't do as much, but the packaging of the beverage has changed also so the actual volume may be close !! Instead of six cans I wind up doing several of the 20 or 24 oz plastic bottles. Flavors (in order) Pepsi, Mountain Dew,Coke, Dr Pepper, Cheerwine, Big Red, then the unusal brands like Vernors or Moxie. I know that when I walk into that college classroom tomorrow night I will have a 24 oz Mountain Dew with me and it will be gone sometime during the first hour of the three hour session.

I will use the generic store brands (SAMS or BIG K) when I can't get the big names on sale. In restaurants I will order Sweet Tea with lemon in place of the soda now and then.

    To all,

Again this might be a generational thing but I would no more think about having soda(pop) for breakfast as I would having saurkraut and sausages. I do agree that there are times when soda in the morning is appropriate. For instance, I worked three shifts for years and during the 12x8 shift it would seen natural to have a soda. After all this is the middle of the day for the shift worker. But then again it was natural to have a beer at the end of the shift.

I just cannot get my head around a Mountain Dew or a Pepsi first thing in the morning; not even an orange "Crush".

At six o'clock in the morning I want a coffee. It doesn't matter if it is Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks, 7-11, or the local diner. Most times the local diner has the better coffee.

I cannot imagine a breakfast without a Diet Coke.

I was in Germany a few years ago and I ask for three Diet Cokes with my typical German buffet. The server was extremely unhappy with me as she felt it was unhealthy and refused to give me three, only two???.

If I cannot have a Diet Coke, I will usually skip breakfast.

I'm not much of a soda drinker myself.. especially in the morning.. decaf coffee or tea, herbal tea, OJ, hot cocoa or milk are my morning preferences.

I know way to many people that do this. I don't drink that much in a year.

I use to drink pop more often during the day before Con-Ag started stuffing HFCS down our throats. I firmly believe this is a primary cause for the rise in diabetes in this country.

I'm a real Juicy/Juice kind a guy when I want sweet(tangerine/orange and cherry Mmm). Sweet tea when I NEED the caffeine and the sugar.

In the morning I admit to a 3-4 cup 'O Joe habit. Cut back years ago from the 8-10 cup a day(morning) fiend I use to be. Sometimes I go with hot earl grey or green tea but it just ain't the same kind of jolt" />!

When I turned forty I discovered this liquid called plain water. Huh...who knew about this stuff!!? I must have missed a meeting or a memo 'cause as it turns out, to my suprise, it's pretty good(even without the bourbon)!

For some reason I've gotten away from the need for caffeine in the morning unless I've had way too little sleep; but if I think of it I may set up a pot of coffee before bed. Then (again if I think of it!) I'll drink a cup in the morning simply because I like the taste. (Sugar, cream, and flavored coffees need not apply!) During the day my beverage of choice is usually a caffeinated diet soft drink, though.

In the bad old days I had a parishioner who never drank coffee--didn't like the taste, he said--but consumed vast quantities of high-test Diet Coke. The fact that he owned the local Coca Cola bottling company may have been connected with that. . . .

I saw somewhere that 7-11 now has a 128-ounce Big Gulp. That's over 1500 empty calories. About 100 teaspoons of sugar. In a beverage! Can anyone absorb those calories without really negative effects? I have trouble getting excess weight off with 2000 TOTAL calories per day of actual food.

    Pigiron,
Take a couple of Lassex (sp?) tablets with that Big Gulp and we will know where to find you ALL DAY LONG!!

I do substitute juice in the evenings..Peach-Grape or OJ and even at times the Wally World brand of the Crstal Light... Zero Calories and Zero caffine. Can't justify drinking that at all!

JudgeMa'am, If'n it ain't highly carbonated, brown, sugared, and more caffine than strong coffee, it ain't worth drinking!

I've had a minimum of 2 Pepsis a day for well over 40 years. I start the day with it, and a can of Pepsi sits in a koozie in the refrigerator at all times so I can sip it during the day. I can't stand coffee (too bitter) and if there is no other choice (like at a banquet), it takes at least 6 teaspoons of sugar per cup to mask the bitterness. For about the last 5 years, I usually also drink a Ruby Red Squirt each evening, and sometimes a glass of white grape/peach juice before bed. Those are pretty much all the types of liquids I currently drink. (No milk except in cooking, and no water.) Occasionally at a Chinese restaurant (not a buffet), if they have green tea, I will drink it with at least 2 teaspoons of sugar per little cup. Since I prefer grapefruit juice to orange juice (note the Ruby Red Squirt above), on vacation trips I used to really shake waitresses up by ordering both grapefruit juice and Pepsi with breakfast. I guess they thought those two shouldn't go together.

Lasix. And you're right. It ain't pretty, but it's also good for a quick (pre-doctor-visit) weight loss and for a hangover. Don't ask me how I know this, but in the second case, do not take it the night before.

And re your comment to the Judge: switch something sweet bu non-caloric for the sugar and I'll agree.

    Laird,
I knew there was a reason I like you ! White Grape/Peach and Cran/Grape are what keeps me going to Wally World!! and the Ruby Red either as "drink" (non-carbonated) or better under the "Squirt" Label is one of the few Non-brown soft drinks I like a lot.

Rick-- One of the few Diet Soda I do enjoy is the Mountain Dew (and it's generic cousins) They seem to hold the flavor of the original. I have yet to find a diet cola that does that...and I have tried them all!

    Hello All,
99.9% of the time I have a soda with every meal or snack, usually a Dr. Pepper.
The .1% of the time is when I would have orange juice at breakfast.
Strangely enough, I will not drink beer or wine when eating, well, except
sometimes I make homemade rolls which I like with beer.
Except for green tea when I am ill, I've never had a glass of tea, and
I've never had a cup of coffee in my life. I am a weird bird I guess.
    Take Care,

A Coke in the morning is very common in the south. I don't drink coffee, my parents concidered it an adult drink. I don't like milk, so I either drink Coke, or tea for breakfast. You can't beat a Coke in the morning!
