Solar Panel Question.

I am considering covering the roof of the bus I'm going to convert with solar panels. The bus is 40'X8' so it should be around 320 Square Feet of panels, plus or minus two or three due to vents and such. Can anyone give me a ballpark figure of what kind of energy I should expect from such a setup?I know I won't be able to run the whole truck off of it, but even if would help with the fridge and freezer it will save me gas for the generator.

I am not sure of what you will get out of it but being mobile it will change depending on the angle of the sun vs your bus too. I looked into it for my home and I have a perfect southern exposed garage roof. The numbers of cost didn't even come close to paying off during the expected life of the panels. Another thing to consider is in a bus you may loose storage or working area due to battery space - depending on your layout.

solar is very pricey, depending on how you go about it. Alot depends on what you want to charge. I want enough of a charge to run my freezer and fridge units over night only. you can expect to haul about 15-20 batteries that are charged on what they call a trickle charger to maintain 8 consistent hours at about 7000 watts. Not to mention the cycle wattage when the units cycle power, " SURGE " You can spent upwards of 10-30k on a system. The one I want will run me about 2-3k just to run a few hours at night. another way would be to run a battery isolator to your battery bank from you altnator, I suggest a high power or possibly 2 high power altnators. They charge the batteries while the truck is running, like driving to daily locations, etc.
