Some sad news about two Virginia Roadfood Institutions

When I was doing research about my first Virginia trip of the year 3 months ago I discovered two things.

Surrey House Restaurant in Surry VA had been closed for renovations although the inn was still open. When I called to inquire they indicated they would be back open in the spring....Well apparently the restaurant is still closed according to their facebook page and inquiries about re-opening are being ignored.

Wayside Inn in Middletown VA had also changed owners at the time their menu was limited although they were still serving their peanut soup. They have since added additional items back onto the menu, unfortunately it does not appear that they have any intention of adding their signature spoonbread and  country ham and red eye gravy back onto the menu

That is bad news on both fronts.  I am especially fond of Wayside Inn and their peanut soup, but it wouldn't be the same without their spoonbread and country ham.

If Surrey House does not re-open, that would be a HUGE loss.

Haven't been to Wayside since I moved to Minnesota, but always enjoyed it when I lived in Virginia. This is sad to hear.

We looked at menu for the Wayside this past Saturday. Peanut soup and chicken pot pie were their only two items that would be considered as Roadfood, so we opted to eat at Southern Kitchen in New Market, Va.  we enjoyed a great lunch there. My choice was the chicken salad sandwich which was terrific.  The fried chicken and country ham, enjoyed by two others was declared "top notch".......................We asked what pies were made right there and our server told us that all of the cream pies were.  The chocolate meringue pie was just outstanding.  I gathered that this restaurant has not yet been sold.
