I must admit I am not much of a fan of the food at Sonic. I will get a burger there at 9 AM if I am craving a burger ...but we use the place for the beverages a lot. Having a Popeyes Chicken next door to our local Sonic makes a two-stop drive-thru lunch pickup something that happens now and then.

I finally stopped at a Sonic yesterday for a burger, my first and last. IMO Checkers does a much better job.

The first Sonic in the Pittsburgh area opened up about two months ago. My buddy Mike wanted to go hit it just a few days after it opened since I once took him to one in Yuma, AZ. Anyway, there was such a big crowd, that they had to have police directing traffic. The place was absolutely mobbed and it was a Monday night! I wanted to turn around and leave, but he insisted on us staying. Anyway, it took us about an hour to get through the line and get our food. Now, I like Sonic, but I will never go through that again! One of the employees told me that the owner of that location planned on opening eight more in the Pittsburgh area. I'm hoping they put one near me in the north suburbs.

Pam, Give it a little time and it will calm down. A new business, especially if it the first of the chain in that area will draw a lot of 'first-timers'. Same thing happened when the first Culvers opened here. It is quite a bit calmer now !

I was first made aware of Sonic when I enter the University of Oklahoma in Norman back in September 1960. Their market area was rather small, at that time. Obviously, they have grown tremendously over the past near half century. I have been a fan ever since that time at OU. For the past 25 years, I have been in Georgia - and a Sonic opened about three miles away a year or so ago. Fast food is something I seldom do now, but Sonic is one of my favorites when I do. My favorite order is a bacon cheeseburger, onion rings, and a cherry limeade. Sonic's definition of curb service has changed considerably over the years. In 1960, it was true curb service. A car hop brought the tray, which was held on the driver's side window with the food on it. The tip was left for the car hop to receive when she retrieved the tray. Now the order is brought in a paper sack, handed to the driver, and once payment is made - the transaction is complete.

Hola! I am from the South and have had Sonic maybe once or twice in my life, and I have passed by them all the time. My whole problem with their setup was the whole drive-in atmosphere of sitting in a car in a parking lot, staring at a door waiting for food to arrive. I never really understood this "drive-in" culture of the 50s and 60s, and the sitting around OUTSIDE for food. The Southern states is hot in the summer with a lot of mosquitos and bugs. The winter is cold and wet. So why sweat and get bug bit, or freeze your tunkus off to get a burger or what not. Not to mention the fact (at least 7 years ago, I have been away from the USA that long) that one could not go inside, which I would usually do instead of sitting in the car. If thr customer is staring at the cook and the cashier, they move faster. Maybe also, I need to pee. The Sonic in Oxford, MS (where I went to college didn't even have a bathroom for their patrons. If they have an inside facility and a drive-thru (which I am sure they do), the food is probably OK, and their food items are interesting and a little different than in other places. But the whole sitting in a dank parking lot is not my idea of fun and adventure. Senor

Sometimes Sonic is wonderful. Other times is it is awful. Do you like Las Vegas? Do you like to eat in your car? If so, Sonic is always worth a gamble.
