Sonic Drive In now in North Jersey

Sonic drive In will open its first outlet in Hasbrouk Heights on Sunday June 21. Restaurant will be located on Route 17 North. There will be both a traditional drive thru window and 20 drive-in parking stalls and servers on roller skates.
 
can't wait to get White Castles on the south bound side of Rt. 17 then make a u-turn a head north for a special Sonic drink.
 
 

I j ust learned that Sonic will also open on Route 46 in Totawa in late July.

We've apparently had one way on the other side of town for a while, but I just found out they're going to be building one about 1/4 mile from my house, to be finished by fall of 2010.

I shall assume only the drive-thru will be open in the winter.

what are the servers going to do in the winter? put snow tires on their skates with little snow plows in front?

The snow is shoveled and they skate here in Columbus.

Ahhh...Sonic slushies...what I'd give to have one right now--it's 92 degress and brush fires are popping up all around us.  One going on right now, third fire for this week.

We have Sonics all over the place here - I rarely eat at them. The dogs and burgers are nothing special, served on stale buns with a side of greasy tater tots with melted processed cheese on them. The carhops don't roller skate around here, and I am not keen on eating in the car when it's really hot or snowing.

We have a similar situation here - Whataburger runs commercials during all the Big 12 games, and they don't have any locations in Kansas.

David NYC - When Sonic first opened down here in Holly Hill, you couldn't get near the place.  They had cars lined up like they were waiting for gas in the 1970's!  They had extra managers, etc.  It was wild!

Today, it's a far different story.  Whether people have grown tired of it, there's more choices, they don't like the food (I don't) or whatever reason, they are just another place now.  They have great varieties of drinks and floats IMHO.  Love their Lime Rickey.

So is the Sonic going to be before the Bendix light as you are going north on 17 or past that light further north?.  Wasn't there a Stewart's Root Beer right there?

It will indeed.  After seeing the commercials for years, they opened one in Hanover, Pa.  HUGE lines for the first few months.  Then, after people realized it wasn't all that special, things slowed down.  They still do a tremendous business but the line to get into the parking lot is no more.
 
I'm such a chump that on my 1st visit there (1st to any Sonic), I drove around the building three times before I realized there is NO place to enter the building to order or eat.  You either eat in your car, or at the few tables in front of the building.
 
The cherry-lime slushy is great, especially at happy hour!

They are building one here in Appleton Wisconsin. I think they will have outdoor or indoor eating just like A&Ws that are around here. I'll try it but if I dont like it there are a lot of other good places here.

There is a fairly new one here in the Madison area (actually in Middleton) and it has been swamped every time I go by there. They even had rental cops directing traffic initially! It seems to have slowed down....I find it average at best....there is a Culvers about a mile away and they are far superior. Plus there are so many great taverns in town where you can get a great bar burger. No more Sonic for me.

As good as the Sonic is here(I have no complains about ours) Culvers is still the place of choice. Though Sonic has tater tots!!! And here too there are a lot of good local places to get a burger. One right in town makes a 1 pound cheeseburger that is to die for.

Sonic is overrated crap.

I don't understand why someone would willingly wait in their car, parked, staring at the kitchen waiting for the food. There is no indoors to get away from the elements, and a lot of stores do not provide a bathroom.

I went to University in Mississippi and there was a Sonic right off campus. Maybe I went there twice in four years.

My funny/sad Sonic story took place last Spring, early on a cold morning...
My elderly aunt & uncle were visiting from Florida, & I was transporting them from my Atlantic City area to a Bar Mitzvah ceremony up in North Jersey...
 
I thought it would be a great idea to make a pit stop at the Sonic on Route 9, in Waretown!! (in-between Toms River and
Manahawkin) ; been there before a handful of times...
So here we were , dressed in our finest attire, in the cold weather , sitting on those concrete picnic tables outside..
(they opted not to eat in the car) ......  they were not impressed with their breakfast food; bad choice, on my part...
my aunt kept mumbling that she'd rather have McDonald's breakfast, with her senior discounts, and indoor seating!

We do this all the time in Kenosha Wisconsin at The Spot Drive In. During warmer months, at Big Star Drive In. That part doesn't phase me.

What does phase me is the food @ Sonic? I don't think I would call it food, per se. But the drinks! Diet Cherry Dr Pepper? In a gallon size? For half price during Happy Hour? SIGN ME UP!!! Also I am addicted to the Ocean Water.

I also need to know why it takes them 5-10 minutes to make a drinks-only order in the drive through.

Senor Boogie Woogie said something about "staring at the kitchen when you're waiting for your food". I don't know about other Sonics, but the one we went to, like Ellen, was on Rt. 9 in Waretown, and you can't SEE the kitchen. It's a building with no windows! It's very scary, that idea, and it was a dreadful, dreadful experience, all the way around. And my boyfriend was nauseous to the utmost from that food. Nothing anyone says can ever make me go there again. They also get society's rudest rejects to work there.

AS with any other fast food place, there are those who love it and those who hate it.  And depending on the location, there are the worst and the best people working there.

Ours opened last fall, considerably ahead of schedule.  They keep it shoveled in winter and still skate to the cars, but the drive-through understandably does a lot more business than the park and get served section.

I still love their onion rings.  And now they are less than a three-minute drive from home.  Works for me.
