Sonic - what happened?

All of the Sonics in Central Indiana (2 in Indy, one in Bloomington) closed without warning a few months back. I kept waiting to see if a new ownership group would step in, but in fact the signs have been taken down and they're just empty shells now. Does anybody know what went down?

They're still operating in the ATL area w/o any noticeable change.

They're still open here in Knoxville and I have not read of any problems with the chain.

Sounds like a problem inside that individual franchise. They're welcome to relocate to the Northern Kentucky area.

I welcomed the 3 Sonics we finally got here in the Fresno area...then my daughter went to work for them... they are individually run so I can't fault them all.. but she was treated shabbily, so there are a couple I'm not too happy with..

Those in Southern Indiana still operate (as of today). Some are better than others as far as care and appearances go.

The Sonics in Knoxville and Maryville, TN are still operating and still as good as ever. I personally enjoy the Sonic as much as ever.

Lambertman, were those among the Sonics that used to be Dog 'n Suds restaurants?

In Oklahoma where the "head shed" (home office) is located are doing great. They just moved in a new sonic building in the brick town area of Oklahoma City. They now have a walk in operation there. We have not tried it yet. The newly opened drive-in that just opened in Midwest City, is going great guns, we are doing our part to keep it going.

It looks like they are expanding pretty quickly in west and southwest FL. Sonics have opened in Bradenton, Venice and the Tampa area plus we're seeing lots more of their ads on local TV channels.

They run ads in the DC TV market but the closest store I can find is Fredricksburg 40 or more miles away. Too bad too, I like their food and especially the real thick milkshakes.

North of Fredricksburg there are Checkers drive throughs. A much cheaper imitations IMHO. Although I will occasionally eat a chili burger or dog there.

I never cared for Sonic. Their food seemed "heavy" to me and sat in the stomach like a bowling ball. But, to each his / her own!

Sonic was struggling a few years ago, and a guy who was pretty high up in Burger King came and rescued them. Here in the South they have become really popular and are opening all over the place. It really has been been a complete turnaround for them. I have to say, I like their cheeseburgers a lot. I haven't tried anything else, but the shakes and different drinks look really good.

As a company, they are thriving, I suppose franchisees here and there might be having individual trouble. Which makes me think of this story:http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2002170453_quiznos04.html

Sorry it took so long to reply. Yes, the Indy locations were D'nS. The Bloomington one was built after D'nS went away.

Let me also add that the Franklin/Middletown location near Towne Mall on Dixie Highway west of I-75 Exit 32 (OH 122) is still operating!

(Sorry for the double post; I hit the wrong key to edit the original post!)

Can't we safely conclude this by agreeing that Sonic, as a big chain, is suffering no ill effects, save possibly for central Indiana.

The nearest Sonic is 6 hours away, Des Moines. My father has requested we take a road trip there for his 50th birthday in September.

Any suggestions on what we should try?

There was a Des Moines thread in the "Where Should I Eat?" forum a few weeks back. I'm guessing you're not going to drive 6 hours, eat, and turn around so you might be interested in some other dining possibilities; if I was along I'd be suggesting the alfredo pizza at Felix & Oscar's (Merle Hay Mall).

Actually, that was my dad's whole plan. I'm not joking, this is a direct quote: "Des Moines? That's only 6 hours away. You know what I'm thinking? We leave Saturday, get there for lunch & dinner, sleep in the parking lot, then wake up & have some of their breakfasts. Then lunch again before we head home."

I will check out the Des Moines thread for more ideas, the alfredo pizza has my interest for sure.
