Southern Alabama and the Florida Panhandle---need new places Thu, 08/12/10 4:49 PM (permalink)
Judging from my last thread here on Roadfood, I haven't been to the Fairhope area in 6 years. I'm going back and would like to know what's good in the area these days. I know there's several places I liked that have gone out of business and I'm sure there are several new places of note. I"m looking for suggestions in The Fairhope/Daphne/Bay Minette are and will also be willing to drive to Mobile, Pensacola, Gulf Shores and down as far as Apalachicola if I  can do a good days worth of local eating. I"m looking for fresh seafood, local specialties, meat and threes, barbeque and maybe even a good happy hour or two. Thanks for the help!

I lived in P'cola for 16 years but with the oil spill, hard to know who survived. Here's a little help:

Thanks, Littleman. Market by the Bay is on my list to definitely try while I'm there. In Pensacola, I've found a place called Jerry's Cajun-----not the same as Jerry's Drive-In but looks like a neat menu, the closest to New Orleans food I'll get while I'm on this trip.

If still there, The Coffee Cup on Cervantes has an EXCELLENT Breakfast. They close after lunch. Great Biscuits and Gravy, Nassau Grits and Omlettes!

                    ED,
                    First of all, Welcome back!!
Second, Do you still have your Scottie? (McDuff insisted that I inquire about your dog) !
Third, Unfortunately while some of the restaurant/stands have survived, some of their products are either not available or really elevated in price due to the disaster in the Gulf. I hope you find some of the wonderful seafood we have enjoyed in the past in that area.

In Dothan AL, Hunts Seafood and Oyster Bar was great and the BBQ place right next door...name escapes me but I will find it and add it here, was also very good.

In Enterprise, AL McGlinns has good seafood as well.

The Pub has great burgers in Fairhope.  Wintzell's has outstanding seafood. Julwin's is a diner serving great breakfast and lunch.

Original Oyster House in Gulf Shores or on the causeway to Mobile. Wracking my brain to remember the name of the old pizza place on the main road into Gulf Shores-Rascal's? Rocky's? I've heard some folks rave about LuLu's in GS, I didin't think it was all that.

I hope you find pressed duck in Alabama!

                                  Welcome back!

Thanks for the welcome! No pressed duck in Alabama, but I finally found an old style Chinese place in Montebello called Canton City. Went there and had it. Good, but certainly the memories are better. I'm too spoiled by the roast duck and Peking duck I can get at Capital Seafood these days!

Do you remember Jerry's Drive In.

                                    Jerry's Drive In @ 2815 East Cervantes St., Pensacola, FL 850 - 433 - 9910.

                                    McGuire's Irish Pub @ 600 East Gregory St., Pensacola, FL 850 - 433 - 6789.

A great little place for lunch or early light dinner is New Yorker Deli just a few doors east of Jerry's Drive In on E. Cervantes. I have to take the CinCHouse there a  minimum of once a week.

Jerry's Cafe still has an outstanding cheese burger, the old fashion kind. Of course McGuire's has everything from great steaks on down to snacks. They have all kinds of burgers and they are hearty so bring appetite for those.

Jerry's Cajun on 9th Ave continues even better after he re built after the fire.....

Joe Patti's Seafood market is grand as ever, but Frank is a real stickler on making sure nothing is sold that could possibly have been oiled, so he is presently flying in great stuff from the non affected areas. There is no visible oil in the reopened fishing areas, but Frank is very suspicious the chemical dispersants may be present. This entire oil thing has been (I will choose my words carefully here)  NOT accurate OR above board by either the company OR the government..... This will be in litigation for many years and the eco damage will be long lasting...

If Frank sells it, expect the highest quality. Even from all the re opened fishing areas he says NO. He distrusts the testing of the product. Frank would close down rather than compromise his quality or reputation.... I think he is "over killing it" but that is Frank, better safe than sorry...

Generally you can eat quality seafood in the Pensacola area with no concern for quality in my opinion. I have no qualms about eating seafood in our "quality" restraunts

The Coffee Cup has gone down somewhat in my opinion but that's just me. Still some good ole fashioned small cafe chow and still good but I am very disappointed in the coffee. Man if a place called The Coffee Cup can't keep the java tasty.... well that is not a good thing.

For a very good breakfast (also they serve lunch and dinner) is Highway 90 Cafe across the street (Cervantes again) from the presently closed Skopelos. A lengthy ownership problem still grinds through the court system until it is resolved
Gus keeps busy with the Highway 90 and another on demand/catering place in the same area. Skopelos was and will again be one of the better restraunts in Northwest Florida. We are all hoping the estate thing will be settled soon so Gus can come back to his previous high station in our area.

Does Joe Patti's still have the little Seafood Bistro open next to the Seafood Market Used to get killer fish sandwiches there when I lived there. Haven't been back to P'cola in 10 years and I miss the great FRESH seafood. I'd kill for a good piece of Grouper right now!

Sorry to hear the Coffee Cup has gone downhill. My all time Breakfast Favorite. A lady named Criolla manned the flattop and could keep 20 orders in her head while cooking up a storm. Nothing was ever written down and she got every order right 100% of the time. Watching her do her magic was poetry in motion. I suppose she's retired by now. That Girl could cook!

FOODBME don't let me deter you from eating at The Coffee Cup. Still great food but for what ever the reason the coffee is not that great.

The little place on to the side of Patti's market I believe is still there but Frank I do not believe owns that. Another member of the Patti family I am guessing.

We get the grouper, salmon and shrimp about once per week and bring home. Usually for the weekend. The salmon of course is an import, maybe for a while until
Frank becomes completely satisfied that the oil and dispersant is not affecting he will import the grouper. The Shrimp is from PNS Bay/East Bay and out of the oil infested waters. BTW all oil is gone visibly and the beach is doing great except lots of people cancelled so there are some great hotel bargains out there right now and with the hot and muggy season drawing to a close we are entering our very best time of the year so COME ON DOWN.
