Southern Kitchen in New Market, VA sold?

I received a message from a cousin who lives right outside of New Market, VA, letting me know that the Southern Kitchen has been sold.  It has been for sale according to this.  She wrote that the people who purchased it are the same owners of the Tilted Kilt in Harrisonburg.  It would be nice if they continued the tradition of this great restaurant, but we will have to wait and see.

The Southern Kitchen first opened April 1, 1955 and is best known for their peanut soup, country ham, fried chicken and pies.

I just looked online at "The Tilted Kilt".  I doubt that any restaurant, along those lines, would go over in New Market.  The last time that we  stopped in at the Southern Kitchen  (two years ago), we had a really great meal.  The owner was stopping at every table to ask how everything was, and to chat a bit.  I was looking forward to stopping there again in the middle of April.

    Greymo-
No doubt that a Tilted Kilt in New Market would never work.  What I am hearing is the new owners did not buy any of the old recipes, so it sure sounds like they are headed in a different direction.

Oh crap. I'll be in New Market for a few days next week. I'm going to be heartbroken if they change the place.

If anything has already changed I guess I'll find out Friday night and I know I'll hear about it from the people around town.

My first meal there was in the summer of 1959 (before I-81 was built!).  I was then 11 from Pittsburgh, and on family vacation.  I had never had Country Ham before and I almost gagged at the saltiness!  The only child of only children, my parents accomodated me by ordering Southern Fried Chicken.  My most recent visit was May, 2013; I had the Country Ham and loved it.

How 54 years just fly by!

Don't fret, the new owners won't dare change a thing.

I was in Colorado Springs this last week and I heard the news through a friend who still takes the local newspaper.  I wonder what will become of the peanut soup recipe.  That stuff was to die for!

Their peanut soup is really good, but I found two places where it was better.  One is the King Arms Tavern in  Colonial Williamsburg and the other place is the Roanoke Hotel in  Roanoke, Va.  Of course, the fact that it is much less expensive at Southern Kitchen, makes it most appealing.

Good news for now. Nothing's changed much. There are two TV screens over the soda fountain, but they aren't massive. The menu seems larger. I had two dinners and a breakfast there and there seems to be a little more attention to detail, ie better coffee, larger portions, food served steaming hot. I had the buckwheat cakes this morning and they were MASSIVE.

I'm very glad to read that. I've been wanting to take a Philly to Nashville roadtrip, with the Southern Kitchen being one of the stops along the way, very badly for a fairly long time. I'm probably going to do it for my 50th birthday some time next year. I'd hate for any of the places I've wanted to eat at for so long - including Ridgewood Barbecue and a few places in Nashville - to go under or change too drastically before I get there.

Thanks so much for the report back Route 11.  That is good news.  Did they still have a similar menu?  Did you try peanut soup or pie?

It still had all the old standbys on it. My dining companion said the fried chicken was good. I had the mini steak both times and it was good too. I did want to talk to the waitresses about what's going on but they were so busy I didn't want to interrupt them!

It had been a couple years for us, but we just ate there Thursday evening (5/22/14), on the way to Nashville.  Everything seemed as good as usual, if not better.   Great fried chicken, country ham, and stewed tomatoes.  Everything was right with the world in little 'ol New Market, VA.

September trip to Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire looking for Road Food places, bar's small town cafe's. Be driving up from Kennebunkport, Maine.
Miles mean nothing to me to fine fun food places.
George from Wisconsin, will be on my motorcycle.
