Eat at WAFFLE HOUSE. Whole Bunch off interstate 75 between Cincinatti and Dayton. Get the country ham.

Got any specific preferences? Cincinnati chili is usually a popular suggestion if you've never had it before. There's a place not far from Jungle Jim's on Route 4 called Mike's chili and gyros. It's next to a Pizza Hut or something like that, easy to miss if you're not looking for it. Good Cincinnati chili and gyros, even though th eplace looks rather unremarkable. Otherwise, there's Blue Ash chili and Camp Washington. Of those two, I've only tried Blue Ash, but it's good, too.

There's plenty of good places in that area, this website is a good place to poke around and look at some restaurant reviews:

If you travel on US-52, you might consider the following two places:

Scioto Ribber, 1026 Gallia St, Portsmouth, Ohio - speciality BBQ ribs

Hickies Hamburger Inn, 3800 Rhodes Ave (east bound US-52), Portsmouth, Ohio - speciality hamburgers

If you decide to travel a little farther north on Ohio-32, you might want to try this place:

Emmitt House, 123 North Market St (corner of Market St and US-23), Waverly, Ohio - a little bit of everything, not just "fine dining" - has a web site at www.emmitthouse.com

Ardee, thanks for the recommendations! I've been looking for ideas for good places to eat in southern Ohio for over a year now. I occasionally travel from Washington, DC to the Department of Energy's gaseous diffusion plant just south of Piketon, Ohio off of US-23 for business and I have searched in vain for good food. I did try Emmitt House on my last visit, but I foolishly ordered crabcakes, which were terrible (I note from the menu that you provided a link for that, wisely, they no longer offer them). I should have known that, unless they're flown in fresh, crabcakes served in a location that is hundreds of miles from an ocean are likely to disappoint. On my next visit, I'll give them another try and order something that is closer to being indigenous to the local area, or I'll try one of the Portsmouth places you recommend. Thanks again!

ardee, thanks for the Portsmouth recommendation. Do you know of any good breakfast places in Portsmouth?

Hillbilly, I'm afraid that I can't help you with breakfast places in Portsmouth. When I eat breakfast at a restaurant in that area I am usually bound either north or west from Piketon, not south.

                    R. B., another place that might interest you near Waverly is the Lake White Club. It has been in business about 60 years, and is known for its fried chicken - but it is only open from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. To find it, follow Ohio-104 to Lake White, then turn onto Ohio-552, then go about 3/4 mile to the restaurant which is on the left.

Ohio-552 follows the north shore of the lake, Ohio-551 follows the south shore at the state park. From the A-plant you can take Ohio-32 west, then turn onto Ohio-104, or you can go to Waverly and double back to the lake on Ohio-104.
