Special rituals for special foods? Thu, 11/18/04 5:45 PM (permalink)
Maybe this topic has been covered, I don't know, I haven't been around here that long, but I was wondering if any of you eat certain foods a certain way. For example (I've posted about this before) I LOVE to eat brown sugar cinnamon pop-tarts toasted, but then frozen in the freezer, and eat the middle first and the frosting-covered edges last. Or, all my sandwiches on regular sliced bread have to be sliced in triangles . . . . or, I always eat the caramel off my Twix and then eat the cookie pieces last. All the rituals help me savor my food, and though they may seem weird, it makes eating them so much more special. Anyone else have something like this going on?

Well, as much as I hate to admit having any sort of ritual, the fact is, I do. I never, never ever, eat anything before putting it in my mouth.

Although dog may be part of my nickname, I never eat anything I haven't handled.

And Adjudicator, that cartoon is a hoot.

I can't wait for the IV pizza.

I can think of one right away. I make this recipe of my great-grandmas for a turnip stew - turnips cooked with beef cubes and broth, rice and carrots. (In our family, it's also called Moving Day Dinner and supposed to bring good luck if it's the first meal in a new home.)

I should just put it into a soup bowl but instead, I pick out the turnips and carrots separately, smash them up with a fork and put a little butter on them, then ladle the beef and rice mixture over them. So do all family members except my husband; he somehow doesn't get it.

A little more down to earth.... Some special rituals-
PEEPS- the bunnies go ears first.. the chicks go head first. Yellow is the color of choice, with Pink right behind...then white and the new purple are distant followers.

TURKEY- Outer wing tips and sections come off the bird after it comes out of the oven, but before the body leaves the pan. No reason, Thats just the way I do it.

BBQ cooking has a whole set of commandments and rituals.. like the Masons and the Mormons only members in good-standing can share them !!

When I eat steamed crabs, I always save the claws for last. When I finish eating all the crabs (mind you, I didn't say when I was full. That would never happen) I pull over the claws & start cracking.

I lick off the salt from my pretzels before eating them! This only applies to pretzel rods, not the fresh kind on a stick.

I sort my M&Ms by color. Does that count?

When eating candy corn I always bite off the white tip first.

Any psychologist would have a field day with this.

On the rare occasion when I eat a Yodel - about once every ten years - I eat off the chocolate, unroll it, lick off the frosting and then eat the cake. I guess it's like Wingster's food savoring trick.

My therapist gave up on this one.

Wow, Wingster, this is an interesting topic. In the immortal words of Robbie Robertson(a complete pr*ck, BTW), "...this is sure dredgin' up some ghosts for me".

I have always nibbled crackers, pretzels, or any other crisp snack food around the edges first, turning and working toward the middle. I haven't the slightest idea why.

I sometimes will do that with sandwiches; I eat around the edges first, so that I can savor the yummy middle last.

This has got to signal some deep sickness in me...

                          Well, que sera.

Bushie, would you be speaking of Robbie Robertson, of The Band fame?

Who else? Of course. And if anyone dares to disagree with my opinion of him, please read, "This Wheel's On Fire", by Levon Helm.

CP, if I would have had more time in Knoxville last month, I would have liked to meet you. Sundance speaks well of you.

When I was a little girl I'd make my mother smash my sandwiches flat before she bagged em up in my lunch.
For awhile I'd keep all my crackers and chips in the freezer because they tasted better that way.
My mother could never eat a candy bar without picking the chocolate off..and even more bizarre..she hated coconut, so she'd get an Almond Joy, pick off the chocolate and the nuts and throw the rest away.
I prefer my pizza refrigerated..so the delivery man with the "keep it hot" bag is wasting his time.
I can't eat beef stew without butter and ketchup in it..

When I eat Little Debbie Nutty Bars (All hail Little Debbies!) I pull off the top wafer eat it, lick up the peanut butter, eat the next wafer and so on.

When I have some potato chips, I eat the smaller/broken ones first and save the big chips for last.

Oreos: the middles first (I know that's common).

Cake: Cake first, and then the frosting (hmmm...there might be a theme here.)

Steak: It has been observed by others that I eat my steak "inside out." I cut into the middle, and then work my way to the sides. I never do that consciously, but it's inevitably what I do.

About once a year, I succumb to the Sugar Siren's song and buy a bag of marshmallowy, sickeningly sweet Circus Peanuts. I immediately throw out all the orange ones and then eat the pink, yellow and white ones in rotation.

Marshmellow bunnies-I eat the ears off first
Cornbread-I like the crust best-Sometimes I don't all of the middle
                                                Same way with biscuits
Peanut butter sandwiches-I make two half folded over sandwiches instead of making a whole sandwich and cuting it in half
I never order anything barbecued with the sauce poured over it-it has to be on the side
Toast-I still like to broil mine in the oven with 5 little margerine pats on each slice
I also break my Hershey bars into the little squares and eat them one by one

First and foremost----I NEVER eat Asian foods without using chopsticks. It just doesn't taste the same!
I always pull jerky into long strips.
With crabs----I always eat the lump body crabmeat first, the legs second and the claws last.
I always eat carrots from the fat end first.

Well, Al, I really can live without Peeps. My dad woud buy them for my mom at eastertime and then hide them, until the time he left them out and no one else touched them. I have never understood their charm. Do you toast them too, like other marshmallows? What a mental image that brings! I genuinely don't want to interfere with your enjoyment, but your question reminded me of mom's treat that no one else would eat, and I'm laughing remembering that.

A friend from Electra, Texas taught me to eat mashed potatoes and peas this way: Get a forkful of 'tatoes, then shove that down into the peas. Eat. If you're subtle about this, no one else at the table will notice. Is this a big thing in Texas? They're really good in the same mouthful. As for those 'tatoes, gotta have a well in them for the gravy also.

Hmmmm---tell me--this turning of the food as you eat around the edges---clockwise or counterclockwise

Peeps have become a ritual in themselves for me---when Peeps show up in the stores--its time to till the garden---and they are always--ALWAYS---eaten "heads first"~yellow for chicks----pink for bunnies.
