Spicy Foods question, desperate! :) Fri, 01/13/06 2:47 PM (permalink)
Hello!!
My first time on the forum, so I'm sorry if this is a common question or not, I didn't come up with much matching this in the search

So anyways, I'm a HUGE fan of spicy foods, I have been since I was a kid. Let's just say I was raised on it
Well, ever since I was about 16 I've been suddenly unable to handle spicy foods well, not via tastebuds, but more like in my stomach and whatnot.

The stuff just WILL NOT digest without a large amount of pain.
Even the least spicy of foods feel like a bucket of Tobasco in (and releasing from) me afterwards!! I wish I knew why this was. Maybe my body just couldn't take much of it and has gotten weaker from it.

So, basically, my question here is, does anyone have any useful recommendations for relieving this pain acquired after eating spicy foods?

I heard Milk does the trick, but I haven't tried it yet. Anyone know of such things?

Any help is well appreciated!!
Thanks~

Sounds like it could be acid reflux disease. I've had it for a few years and currently take Nexium for it, although I've tried quite a few different meds before finding something that worked.
It would probably be better to ask a physician instead of a food website. Some of these people are maniacs.

Hahaha, well I figured if I asked a food forum I'd get simpler, quicker recommendations as opposed to clinical, expensive perscriptions. I'm always for simplicity

I don't think it could be Acid Reflux because I have no problems with acid regurgitation, in fact the only symptom I'm showing is stomach problems with spicy foods. Nothing else seems to cause this, just spicy foods

I resemble that remark, thank you very much...

I agree though, a doctor should be your first step. But you might want to check out the heartburn thread when I was curious for a home remedy for simple heartburn...

Naw, Ulcers kind of ... affect you with everything whereas this is effecting me with spicy foods. My Mom had an ulcer awhile back and it burned no matter what food she ate until she finally got it fixed.

But nobody seems to know what's going on because people usually get heartburn with spicy foods, not harsh stomach pains. I'll probably go check out the Doctor sometime soon to see what's up.

                  I'm reading through that thread
Thanks for that, I'm gonna try some of those things out, too.
Even though they're focused on heart burn, they might work for my stomach.

If it burns your mouth it's likely going to burn your bum, so the burning on release part is normal. It's just the price you pay. I suggest sitting on a mound of ice cream.

As far as you digesting with pain, that's indicative of a systemic problem and like the others have said, you should talk it over with a doc. You could have a gut flora imbalance, which can be serious.

Hmm...have we defined what "spicy food" is? Is it a 6 Alarm bowl of red, an Indian curry, perhaps a Chinese dish with a lot of garlic. All are commonly called spicy but are all very different. Spicy covers a lot of territory in contemporary cuisine.

I do infer you are talking about capsicum, however. In the past capsicum was blamed wrongly for a lot of digestive problems and was commonly associated with ulcers. Modern research has proven capsicum not only blameless, but also quite beneficial for the digestive process and health in general.

Of course it is possible you are over doing it or handling it incorrectly, capsicum is quite capable of inflicting nasty burns, but I don't think this is the case here.

Anyway, your post inspired me to write a couple lines of doggerel about the subject:

Capsicum, capsicum, the spice so nice
It greets you twice, how could it be a vice?

                          Hoping you find a solution.

                          Best Regards,

                            Heheh, nice work.

But to answer your first, the reason I haven't
gone into specifics with the spicy foods is because it
really hasn't mattered at all what the food is, although I've noticed spicy burritos do nothing to me.

80% of the spicy foods I eat involve chicken, come to think of it. It may be a spicy chicken sandwich at Burger King or Checkers, or it may be a plate of hotwings. Even spicy flavored pork rinds. All these things will cause the pain. I wonder if there is some significance in these selections. Maybe synthetic spices?

Have you determined it is only spicy chicken, and not just chicken? (You might possibly have developed an allergy to chicken.) If your pain appears with greasy food in general (like the pork rinds), it could be a gall bladder problem.

Yeah, it's definately spicy chicken only
I eat non-spicy chicken almost constantly and it never does a thing to me. But the gall bladder thing sounds like it could be right because it seems to only be with greasy+spicy foods, not the well-cooked stuff like restaurant foods.

I have the exact same problem. I used to eat spicy food like it was going out of style. I can still eat extremely spicy foods, no problem with taste buds - enjoy very much - however in the past year or 2 I have been experiencing extreme stomach pains in the morning and without going into too much detail, issues in the the bathroom.

I don't have these problems with any other food (sometimes coffee I think, but it is different). I don't have heartburn per say - no acid reflux, just extreme stomach pain.

So now I stay away from spicy foods or take pills antacid etc.. will help but I want to figure out why this is. I am 33 and never had this problem until recently.

Did you figure anything out? see a doctor?

I am desperately seeking an answer to this as well! thanks!

I have been searching online everywhere for answers. This is the closest thread anywhere I have seen that describes my situation.

I'd still see a Doctor, maybe at a health fair?
I've a friend like that that drank aloe vera and now claims he is cured.
But you still want to see a doc just to rule out anything more serious.
My FIL was treated for heatburn that nothing worked on.
Finally he went to a specialist who informed him to get his affairs in order.
You don't want that to happen to you.

Yeah, you know there's that organization in Tennessee, the Rural Physicians something or other . . but I think you have to go to wherever they're seeing people.  It's inconvenient but it's free.

                                        I offer three suggestions:

                                        1.  Stop eating the foods that cause you pain, TODAY!

                                        2.  Go to your doctor, TODAY!

                                        3.  Don't ask for medical advice on a food website.

Failure to get a proper diagnosis could result in serious medical problems up to and including death.

natasjlp, does your county or city have a Health Department?  Health Departments often periodically offer free (or very cheap) medical clinics for people without insurance.

A fiver says you have a Duodunal ulcer. Age is not a factor, it's caused by a bacteria called H pilori, can be cured by a 2 week Antibiotic regimen. You need to get a blood and stool test to make sure. 50% of Americans carry the Bacteria, It attacks at random, trust me on this, I just had it. If you don't treat it it can cause a perforation of your stomach and that's the last thing you want, that can kill you...good luck!

Haven't seen a doctor, no health insurance :(

According to the government of Massachusetts, "As of July 1, 2007 all residents (are) required to maintain health insurance."

keep away from spicy foods (that can include mint and maybe even red sauces) till you see a doctor and figure out what the problem is.

I wonder if that Massachusetts law succeeded in providing universal coverage.

Hpilori, thanks Chehwer! I will pass that on to some of my family that has these problems. They can't even eat my chili and it's usually made mild for the kidos. You can spice up your own bowl w/ pickled jalapenos or ???

All of the above advice is good. But try generic ranitidine 75 mg which is sold by Walmart or Walgreen as their "Equate" product. This is Zantac and about one a day or two if you know you will be eating spicy stuff works for me...
